Position Summary
Bow Valley College is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Data Security Analyst to join its Cybersecurity team. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer this role is responsible for the operation application investigation and enforcement of cybersecurity systems and policies across the College. The Data Security Analyst plays a critical role in coordinating technical security activities managing and enhancing security infrastructure and ensuring timely investigation and resolution of security incidents.
Operating at an intermediate escalation level within the Security Operations Center (SOC) the successful candidate will monitor network and system activity using advanced detection and analytics tools conduct threat hunting using internal telemetry and threat intelligence and respond to incidents in alignment with established procedures and accelerated timelines.
In addition to security operations the Data Security Analyst contributes to the continuous improvement of the Colleges security and system architecture by supporting the design implementation and lifecycle management of secure infrastructure. This includes participating in strategic projects aligned with cybersecurity and cloud computing roadmaps maintaining security architecture standards and serving as a point of escalation for technical security concerns.
The role also supports risk management through participation in security assessments audits vulnerability scanning penetration testing coordination and compliance reviews to ensure ongoing adherence to standards and best practices. The analyst will enhance organizational threat intelligence by analyzing emerging threats collaborating with internal and external stakeholders and contributing to security awareness and training initiatives within both the College and the broader post-secondary community.
A key focus of this role is advancing data governance privacy and application security practices. The Data Security Analyst will implement and enforce data classification lifecycle and access governance controls while maintaining visibility into data lineage and inventory including emerging AI-generated datasets. Responsibilities include ensuring secure third-party data sharing embedding privacy-by-design principles protecting sensitive and personal information through advanced safeguards and enforcing compliance with data retention and disclosure requirements.
The role also involves integrating security into the software development lifecycle through automated controls conducting comprehensive application security testing managing vulnerabilities through continuous discovery and remediation and securing application identities and secrets.
The successful candidate will leverage AI-assisted tools and automation to enhance detection investigation and response capabilities manage multiple concurrent security incidents in a high-volume threat environment and execute containment actions to minimize impact. They will continuously evolve detection strategies to address emerging threats including those driven by AI and automation.
As an active member of IT project teams the Data Security Analyst will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders contribute to technical requirements gathering provide expertise to non-technical audiences and support project delivery in alignment with ITS methodologies. Minimum Qualifications
- At least 3 years of Cybersecurity related experience or 5 years of development support or systems administration experience
- Diploma in Computer Science or equivalent
- Experience in an intermediate technical position responsible for managing Microsoft-based systems.
- Application/Web Security (best practices encryption)
- System & Network Design
- SSL DNS
- Familiarity with TCP/IP and operating system configuration.
- Firewall configuration and operation
- A combination of education and experience may be considered
