JOB SUMMARY:
The Transit Operator independently performs transportation services by operating agency buses throughout Oswego County and surrounding areas. This position is responsible for developing a daily driving route based on a preliminary pickâup schedule and managing frequent routing and schedule adjustments throughout the day.
The Transit Operator primarily transports consumers with a variety of physical medical and psychological needs to medical and behavioral health appointments. On occasion the driver also transports members of the general public through a sharedâride system.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely transports passengers in all road traffic and weather conditions
- Develops a new route daily based on demand service schedules and client needs
- Adjusts routes and schedules throughout the workday in coordination with dispatch
- Loads and secures passengers including those using wheelchairs and mobility devices
- Determines safe and appropriate bus placement for all pickâups and dropâoffs
- Interacts professionally with healthcare staff at medical and behavioral health facilities
- Assists consumers with complex physical and psychological needs
- Monitors consumer conditions and responds appropriately to changes or emergencies
- Ensures safe operation of the bus and follows emergency and safety procedures
- Performs required preâtrip and postâtrip vehicle inspections and documentation
- Reports maintenance or safety issues promptly
- Collects fares tickets tokens or passes as applicable
- Uses proper radio procedures and 10 codes professionally
- Administers First Aid and follows universal precautions for bloodborne pathogens
- Assists passengers with groceries packages and personal belongings
- Provides guidance to a bus aide when assigned
- Adheres to all agency policies schedules and procedures
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrates tact courtesy and professionalism with staff and the public
- Ability to remain calm and effective in chaotic or stressful situations
- Meets all requirements of the Driving Safety Policy and DMV Article 19âA
- Thorough knowledge of roadways in Oswego and adjacent counties
- Ability to operate all vehicles in the transportation fleet including wheelchair lifts
- Maintains professional grooming uniform appearance and demeanor
- Must attain and maintain a CDL Class B with air brake and passenger endorsement
- Meets all physical and mental health standards under 19âA regulations
- Ability to frequently push/pull wheelchairs and assist passengers weighing 150 lbs
- Physical capability to assist passengers up/down stairs and in/out of vehicles
- Sound judgment to assess situations and seek assistance when appropriate
- Flexibility to work shifts of 10 hours with variable start and end times
- Ability to read maps use radio procedures and apply 10 codes
- Basic reading writing and arithmetic skills
- Maintains CPR certification and attends required training
- Completes annual Bloodborne Pathogen Diversity Emergency Preparedness training
- Completes defensive driving training every three years
- Successfully meets Drug & Alcohol testing and fingerprinting requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent; and ability to obtain a CDL Class B license with air brake and passenger endorsement; and
- A minimum of one years experience transporting passengers; or
- Any equivalent combination of education experience and training.
