Department Summary

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the intellectual hub of the University of Oregon serving nearly two-thirds of all students. Home to more than 800 faculty across 50 departments and programs in the humanities natural sciences and social sciences CAS is a dynamic and interdisciplinary academic community. CAS is organized into six Academic Support Units (ASUs) each housing staff managers and an associate director who provide undergraduate and graduate academic support as well as faculty and operational support to the multiple academic departments and programs in CAS. ASU 5 is a uniquely positioned unit that provides support to faculty and students interested in how artistic expression and human experience intersect with both the humanities and social sciences in the past and in the present. Covering disciplines that study ethnicity history culture identity and creativity ASU 5 is a hub of research and instruction for some of the most vital and profound subjects posed in our modern global society. ASU 5 includes the following departments programs and research center: Anthropology; Black Studies; the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies; Cinema Studies; Creative Writing; History; Geography; Indigenous Race and Ethnic Studies; Latinx Studies; Native American & Indigenous Studies; Queer Studies; Theatre Arts; University Theatre; and Womens Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Position Summary

This position serves in one of the six Academic Support Units (ASUs) within the College of Arts and Sciences Division of Administrative Services (CASDAS). The Office Generalist serves as the main receptionist for the ASU and works closely with other staff providing logistical support across Operations and Academic functional areas as directed by the Operations Manager. Duties may include supervising student workers maintaining a front office coordinating deliveries tracking supply and equipment inventories scheduling conference rooms coordinating events providing general communications support coordinating building maintenance and tech support and other daily office operational tasks. As the first point of contact for the ASU the Office Generalist interacts with staff faculty students and members of the public to route inquiries disseminate information and address issues. The Office Generalist applies standard operating procedures and unit policies to direct workflows and respond to requests escalating matters up to the Operations Manager when needed.

Minimum Requirements

Two years of general clerical experience. One year of which included typing word processing or other experience generating documents; OR
An Associates degree in Office Occupations or Office Technology; OR
Graduation from a private school of business with a Certificate in Office Occupations or Office Technology and one year of general clerical experience.

College courses in Office Occupations or Office Technology will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team providing support where needed.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 software.
Ability to learn new software.
Ability to understand and apply policies procedures rules and/or regulations.
Ability to problem-solve and exercise sound judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a college or university setting.
Experience with communications.
Experience with front office operations.
Experience with supervising or functioning as a team lead.
