Description
The General Maintenance position is responsible for performing a variety of carpentry tasks including repairing constructing painting and installing materials to support maintenance and building operations.
Responsibilities:
- Constructs erects installs and repairs structures and fixtures of wood plywood wallboard brick masonry tile and concrete using carpenters hand tools and power tools in compliance with local building codes. Work involves structures/fixtures such as roofs tiles window frames air vent frames cabinets ceiling tiles countertops glass blinds screens doors subfloors floors molding benches playground equipment stairs bleachers walls manhole masonry shelves paneling snow removal and other duties as assigned.
- Reviews and interpret blueprints sketches or building plans to determine the type of material required and the dimensions of the item to be constructed.
- Prepares materials needed by measuring cutting shaping and sanding; according to the specifications using tools such as table saw radial saw router drill press miter saw air powered hammer lathe sander shaper bench grinder rulers screw drivers hammers nails and caulking.
- Installs and repairs materials at the site using tools such as drills hammers nails screwdrivers trowels grout glass sealer ladders etc. as specified by plans or the user. Cleans the worksite of dust and debris.
- Completes work orders by indicating the number of work hours and the amount of materials associated with each job.
- Assists with training and instructing new employees and carpenter helpers.
- Orders and picks up appropriate materials to complete assigned task.
- Communicates openly and recognizes contributions of co-workers and supervisor.
- Pursues professional development to keep pace with demands for services and information including maintaining up to date information about the department and university.
- Prepares surfaces for painting/coating by: patching plaster/drywall; finishing drywall; pressure cleaning; sanding; scraping; or using other methods to remove peeling paint or material adhering to surfaces; cut glass and install; sealing/caulking/glazing of windows; using cleaning solutions to clean surfaces or to remove old finishes; placing drop cloths over shrubbery furniture or floors.
- Mixes and/or blends paints to match colors.
- Arranges and assembles scaffolding units and/or ladders at the site.
- Applies coatings of paint wallpaper stain polyurethane rust proofing agent etc. using brushes (synthetic and natural) rollers with varying thicknesses of roller naps and with extension handles up to 16 ft
- Cleans brushes rollers and equipment by using soap or other solvents. Leaves work area clean and orderly.
- Follows safety procedures in the use and disposal of hazardous materials and the use of personal protective equipment.
- Performs and completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Requirements
Education & Skills:
- High School graduate or equivalent and/or 1 - 2 years experience in related field.
- Ability to work accurately with figures measurements and tools.
- Ability to read and interpret sketches/drawings and to interpret verbal or written requests from end users.
Other Requirements:
- Missouri Class E valid drivers license with a good driving record. Class E license may be obtained within 30 days of hiring
- Ability to work nights and weekends if needed. Will be part of on call rotation.
- Daily lifting tools 10-30 lbs
- Frequent lifting concrete and brick materials up to 80 lbs
- Frequent lifting of all office furniture and residence hall furniture.
- Frequent lifting shelves hardware etc. to install fixtures tiles shelves etc.
- Continuous standing; kneeling; stooping; turning knobs and levers
- Continuous operating equipment accurately by holding it steady while vibrating adjusting guides and measures to ensure the desired cut and judging when the material meets specifications.
