Role Overview
The Commissioning Specialist is responsible for supporting startup and commissioning activities for large-scale mechanical construction projects. This role ensures that MEP systems are installed tested and operating in accordance with design intent manufacturer specifications and project requirements.
Working closely with project managers field teams engineers and subcontractors the Commissioning Specialist plays a critical role in validating system performance identifying issues early and supporting successful project turnover.
This is a field-focused position ideal for candidates with a strong HVAC controls or MEP background who enjoy hands-on work troubleshooting and working directly with building systems during installation and startup phases. Ideal candidates have experience with commercial HVAC systems and building automation understand construction workflows and are looking to grow into more advanced commissioning or leadership roles over time.
Core Responsibilities
Support startup and commissioning activities across multiple mechanical construction projects
Perform system inspections testing and functional verification of HVAC and MEP systems
Conduct point-to-point checkout system startup and integration verification across mechanical and controls systems
Ensure systems are installed and operating according to design documents specifications and manufacturer requirements
Assist with development and execution of commissioning plans and procedures
Troubleshoot mechanical electrical and controls-related issues during startup and commissioning phases
Coordinate with project managers field teams subcontractors and engineers to resolve system deficiencies
Review construction drawings submittals and sequences of operation to support commissioning efforts
Support coordination with building automation system (BAS/BMS) teams and controls contractors
Document testing results system performance and commissioning progress
Assist in preparing system manuals reports and project closeout documentation
Support coordination with testing and balancing (TAB) teams
Communicate issues risks and progress updates to project stakeholders in a timely manner
Ensure compliance with quality standards safety protocols and project requirements
Participate in job site walks and verify readiness for system startup and testing
Required Background
Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship as sponsorship is not available for this position
3 years of experience in commissioning controls HVAC or MEP field roles
Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS/BMS) DDC controls or HVAC control platforms
Strong knowledge of commercial HVAC systems and mechanical equipment (chillers AHUs RTUs VAVs VFDs cooling towers)
Understanding of electrical systems controls and sequences of operation
Ability to read and interpret construction drawings blueprints and technical documents
Experience with system startup testing troubleshooting or field service
OSHA 10 certification required; OSHA 30 preferred
Strong problem-solving skills and hands-on technical aptitude
Effective communication skills with the ability to coordinate across multiple teams
Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel Word) and basic project tools
Data center or mission-critical facility experience strongly preferred
EPA Universal Certification preferred
Experience with BACnet IP networking or building automation communication protocols preferred
Familiarity with commissioning tools such as CxAlloy BIM360 or Procore preferred
Exposure to large-scale commercial or industrial construction projects preferred
HVAC certification or equivalent technical training preferred
Valid drivers license and ability to pass background and drug screening
