The Building Maintenance Specialist maintains repairs and restores all aspects of the facilities within the South Dakota State Fairgrounds. The Building Maintenance Specialist works under the direction of the Maintenance Operations Manager. Knowledge of methods and practices of general building and facility maintenance and building construction are ideal. Provides physical labor on a variety of routine building maintenance projects to complete assigned projects. Mechanical carpentry and preventive maintenance experience beneficial. Assists with preparation of grounds and facilities for special events including set-ups and clean-ups. Candidate must have good communication skills complete tasks in a timely manner have the ability to lift 50 lbs. or more and successfully direct the activities of others. Providing positive customer relations and customer service is a must.
This position assists with operations and preparation of grounds and facilities for the annual State Fair and non-fair time events including set-up tear-down clean-up and general maintenance for buildings grounds and equipment. This position takes a lead role with both short- and long-term facility repair operation and planning. Applicants are required to have received technical training in one of the following areas: carpentry electrical plumbing or HVAC.

- Work outside in all types of weather conditions.
- Perform physical labor using a variety of machinery and equipment.
- Repair and maintain a variety of facilities machinery and equipment.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must have a valid drivers license.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A licensed electrician or plumber or have received technical training in carpentry HVAC or another building maintenance related trade.
They will:
- demonstrate a high level of professionalism;
- be able to juggle and prioritize multiple tasks and projects while maintaining a positive attitude;
- be quick on their feet and able to identify solutions when problems occur;
- effectively communicate to build solid working relationships with internal colleagues as well as external customers.
Knowledge of:
- carpentry skills required to perform many aspects of building repairs;
- basic plumbing knowledge including knowledge on how to drain plumbing in facilities in the fall and turn them back on in the spring;
- basic building procedures with the ability to read building plans and estimate material needs;
- communication skills to solve conflicts with visitors volunteers and/or seasonal staff;
- safe operating guidelines for equipment;
- methods and practices of general building and facility maintenance.
Skill to:
- communicate with all types of people under all types of conditions;
- read and understand blueprints;
- use email and operate a computer;

- diagnose plumbing issues and either repair them or find someone who can;
