Salary/Position Classification

  • $44000 annual Exempt
  • 40 hours per week
  • This position will work onsite the Grand Forks ND campus.

Purpose of Position

The Academic Advisor provides academic advisement recruitment and retention to undergraduate students at the University of North Dakota. This position helps to advise any/all undergraduate majors and minors. Academic advisors help to serve the needs of the Core Advising team as well as any unmet student needs across campus. Academic advisors will utilize various academic advising tools and technologies to advise and interact with students regularly. Advisors will attend academic advising events along with student success programming including commencement ceremonies.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide academic advanced degree program and career advising for current on campus and online undergraduate programs assigned to including knowledge of all degree requirements
  • Meet with students for scheduled appointments and on a drop-in basis
  • Advise incoming students during new student/first-year advising and registration
  • Communicate with incoming transfer students on a continuous and ongoing basis
  • Understand needs of various student populations at the institution as a whole and within assigned college(s)
  • Understand and appropriately use various advising models
  • Participate in assessment of advising
  • Collaborate with departments of programs assigned to address advising needs for the department
  • Write letters of recommendation for students and serve as a reference for students as needed
  • Understand institutional specific policies and procedures such as term dates and deadline the ES petition the Ad Pro petition the graduation application withdrawal processes changes of major collaborative course processes readmission and reinstatement processes academic grievance processes etc.
  • Understand program/college/University goals for retention and graduation
  • Understand the basics of financial aid and when to refer students to other resources
  • Utilize career exploration tools (e.g. career exploration software Academic and Career Exploration career services events pairings of degree options graduate or professional degree options) in the advisement of students
  • Utilize and connect students with campus resources and services
  • Utilize advising technology including student information system advising platform and others as determined necessary in the completion of effective general advising
  • Understand student technology including student use of learning management system and career services platform - (Essential)
  • Participate in on-campus recruitment events and after-hour admission events as requested
  • Participate in Experiential Learning Center events as requested
  • Attend workshops for professional development
  • Participate in college and campus-wide advising events and outreach
  • Participate in advising and advising-adjacent professional development opportunities
  • Assist other advisors and their students as needed for extended leaves and absences

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Experience in an academic or professional setting
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
