POSITION SUMMARY & PURPOSE

The Assistant Principal supports the principal by overseeing daily school operations supervising staff and students enforcing policies and helping ensure a safe effective learning environment. The Assistant Principal is responsible for the organization operation and management of the Summer School program.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

School Culture

School Leadership & Operations

  • Support the implementation of school-wide systems and routines that promote a safe orderly and welcoming learning environment.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and leadership team to develop and implement strategic goals aligned with the schools mission and values.
  • Assist with staff coaching professional development and support around classroom management and student engagement.
  • Serve as a visible and engaged leader throughout the school day including arrival dismissal lunch and transition periods.
  • Serves as an administrator overseeing the planning and implementation of summer school

Family Services

  • Serves as a liaison between families schools courts community agencies and other organizations to assist families facing poverty or homelessness
  • Refers clients to community resources for needed services
  • Develops connections with community businesses and organizations
  • Maintains case history records and prepares reports
  • Designs and oversees opportunities for involving parents guardians and volunteers in the life of the school and establish a forum for publicizing ways that parents/volunteers can be involved in the school
  • Facilitates Parent Teacher Action Team (PTAC)
  • Supervises the social workers

Attendance

  • Monitors school-wide attendance and assists with initiating programs that will decrease absenteeism and tardiness
  • Leads the school attendance team
  • Attends Truancy court
  • Consults with parents teachers and other school personnel to determine causes of problems such as truancy and to implement solutions

Homelessness and McKinney Vento Coordinator

  • Acts as a liaison authorized to affirm whether children and youth meet the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) definition of homelessness to qualify them for HUD homeless assistance programs.
  • Interprets laws relating to homeless students; and ensures the delivery of mandated services.
  • Assesses students identified as homeless and makes visits to living areas/shelters to assess the family environment.
  • Collaborates with school staff to develop interventions for students identified as homeless and develops individualized service plans.
  • Serves as a liaison between schools and such agencies/facilities as homeless shelters social services court services and the police department to coordinate assistance for homeless students.
  • Acts as a resource to administrators guidance counselors teachers and health services personnel regarding homeless students interpretation of homeless/school attendance policies and laws and record-keeping requirements.
  • Conducts training to school staff on school laws as it relates to the homeless student population; and recommends strategies for supporting the needs of these students.
  • Maintains necessary records ensuring confidentiality of students and their families and prepares related reports.
  • Refers homeless families and students to housing services in addition to other services.

Legal

  • Ensures that Brookside Charter complies with and meets all deadlines associated with state federal and sponsor reporting and statutory requirements.
  • Develops and maintains a productive and positive relationship with Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education staff.
  • Ensures the lawful use of all Brookside Charter funds.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

*All requirements listed below are required unless otherwise designated as preferred.

Education and Certifications

  • Requires a masters degree in Secondary Education Educational Administration or a closely-related field.
  • Missouri Administrative certification is preferred.





Experience

  • Experience teaching in an urban school environment preferred.
  • Experience teaching historically underserved populations (or historically marginalized populations) with a record of positive academic improvement is preferred.



Skills and Traits

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace Microsoft Office and/or equivalent software.
  • The Assistant Principal will demonstrate an understanding of how school operations and administration support instruction.
  • The Assistant Principal will make sure school procedures are clearly understood and implemented serve a single purpose to support pursuit of student academic outcomes.
  • The candidate must be self-reflective as well as fair and respectful of others. While the Assistant Principal will be adept at giving affirming and adjusting feedback fairly and respectfully s/he will also be self-reflective and accept feedback from the Board Superintendent Principal teachers school staff and others in the same spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility for future outcomes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • This position may require sitting standing and walking for intermittent periods as well as moderate dexterity in operating standard office equipment (e.g. computer printer copier).
  • This position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision hearing and speaking.
