This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with the Hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.

CBC/Radio-Canada is an essential national public service media organization that serves and listens to the people across Canada. Reporting to the Senior Manager HR you are part of the English Services People & Culture team providing direct Human Resources/Industrial Relations support to leaders of CBC News. Your clients CBC News strive to inform Canadians through verified and reliable news provided with accuracy impartiality integrity and independence. You will be part of a team of passionate professionals who are dedicated to driving exceptional employee experiences and fostering a culture of respect engagement and inclusivity.


As a Senior HR Business Partner you will work collaboratively with CBC News leadership teams to ensure the success of their operational and people strategies. To do this you provide dynamic strategic HR/IR consultation and coaching provide recommendations and analysis to proactively address key business and people challenges and partner with internal centre of expertise. This role requires you to communicate effectively and exercise influence provide IR support in a unionized environment exercise strong judgment discretion and make decisions effectively.


This role is based in Toronto.


Key tasks:

  • As the first point of HR/IR contact provide creative and strategic advice to leaders on a full-range of complex HR/IR issues;

  • Establish a strategic consultative approach that aligns HR best practices industrial relations challenges and the reality of the digital world;

  • Spearhead key HR/IR initiatives with an eye for aligning HR practices with the specific needs and reality of CBC News;

  • Support leaders in matters such as performance management industrial relations organizational development change management compensation and workforce planning;

  • Ensure productive union-management relations by maintaining effective working relationships with union representatives locally and nationally;

  • Establish strategic partnerships and set priorities in a fast paced environment;

  • Using sound judgment make decisions and recommendations to resolve complex issues;

  • Ensure highly effective union-management relations and strategically manage complex industrial relations matters to resolution;

  • Support clients in locations across Ontario requiring some travel.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • Bachelors degree in human resources management industrial relations or a related discipline;

  • A minimum of five years of experience of progressive HR experience;

  • Professional designation CHRP or CHRL is preferred;

  • Experience in a unionized work environment is preferred;

  • Ability to build strong working relationships with leaders developing mutual understanding and exercising influence;

  • Proven ability to resolve complex HR/IR issues;

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated ability to support and influence leaders and employees at all levels;

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently;

  • Ability to make difficult decisions to solve complex problems and support recommendations;

  • Bilingualism English and French is an asset.
