Calling all post-secondary students and recent graduates! CBC Edmonton is looking for candidates for its 2026 summer scholarship program.
Over the course of 13 weeks two high-potential emerging journalists will get valuable hands-on experience in our daily multi-platform newsroom setting them up for possible employment at CBC News in the long term.
During the scholarship you will split your time between working as a multi-platform reporter (digital social audio and visuals) both in news and in current affairs radio.
You will be expected to pitch and chase original story ideas research and conduct interviews book guests for live interviews prepare scripts gather and edit produce audio and video write and package stories and present material on-air.
The program will run from June 1 2026 to August 30 2026. CBC Edmonton will provide training and orientation as well as ongoing mentorship to ensure candidates are properly supported.
Who is eligible
- Graduating post-secondary students (college or university) in their final year of study. Applicants will be considered if they have graduated or will graduate between fall 2025 and spring 2026.
- Candidates must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
- Candidates must be able to work on a full-time in-person basis from our downtown Edmonton office.
- Formal journalism education is not required however candidates must demonstrate they have journalism skills and experience.
- Candidates must possess a valid Canadian drivers licence.
What qualities are we looking for
- A strong potential for producing journalism marked by curiosity critical thinking command of facts understanding of context and clarity of expression.
- The ability to generate pitch and pursue strong original creative story ideas that will deepen CBCs connections with communities in Edmonton and Northern Alberta and will elevate a range of voices.
- A willingness to learn and tackle new tasks across all CBC platforms and programs.
- A commitment to upholding journalistic and ethical standards and to producing work that is fair balanced accurate and thoughtful.
- A proven work ethic strong communication skills and a positive team-first attitude.
- An understanding of the diverse and changing population in Edmonton and the importance of broadening the range of perspectives experiences and points of view reflected in mainstream media.
- A strong desire to live and promote the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.
- Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
Compensation details:
- These are paid full-time positions; compensation is approximately $23/hour.
- CBC will pay work-related travel costs but scholars are responsible for their own accommodation and living expenses.
