POSITION DESCRIPTION:
This position is responsible for assisting with front office clerical and secretarial duties and for coordinating and conducting translation/interpretation supports at Jackson Elementary. The position requires flexible hours to interpret for evening meetings and other last-minute translations as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Serve as translator/interpreter.
- Translates school and classroom newsletters and other school-related communications.
- Assists with phone calls and in-person interactions at school buildings for families needing Spanish interpretation.
- Assists teachers in communicating with families to facilitate their participation and support in their childs education including student progress on learning objectives educational supports attendance and social-emotional development.
- Assists with parent teacher conferences and other school-wide events such as after school events etc.
- Works with the school principal to improve overall communication to and from Spanish-speaking families including research of digital tools to improve efficiency and effectiveness of translated communications.
- Assists staff in other areas such as school nurse school counselor and principal with parent and/or student communications.
- May assist with IDEA meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Assists with supporting the front office in secretarial and other duties.
- Monitor Frontline daily report and coordinate needs with the substitute coordinator and school principal.
- Orient and assist substitutes to their assigned duties.
- Maintain daily records of staff absences substitutes and other staff related data.
- Perform usual office routines and practices including but not limited to telephone procedures messages and copying.
- Arrange and follow up with work orders for repair of any and all office equipment.
- Assist students and staff with all first aid related items in the absence of the nurse.
- Assist with medications to students under a licensed Nurses direction will undergo Nurse protocol training.
- Assist visitors families students and staff on initial contact with their varying needs.
- Sort and distribute all school communications and mail.
- Provide attendance information to the principals and assist in investigating attendance and tardy problems.
- Perform other job-related duties as may be requested by the principal.
- Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- High levels of proficiency in oral and written English/Spanish and the ability to conduct simultaneous translations.
- Ability to communicate clearly and positively with various members of the school community.
- Knowledge of computers Google software applications and Microsoft Word/ Excel and other office equipment (copiers fax etc.)
- Knowledge of and familiarity with the specified language culture including customs values beliefs and behaviors.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work flexibly and with minimal direction.
- Ability to manage projects/tasks and meet predetermined deadlines.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Strong organizational skills that enable multitasking.
PREFERRED BACKGROUND AND WORK EXPERIENCES:
- Experience working with Spanish-speaking parents and families in an educational setting.
- Experience with various communication structures and systems: School Messenger Educational Applications that include translations etc.
- Understanding of the Latino community in Teton County and contacts with community service agencies.
EDUCATION LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Bachelors degree and/or two years clerical or related education preferred.
- Training/certification in translation/interpretation preferred and if not obtained at time of hire will require completion of certification within one year of employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
