Position Overview The Lands Council is seeking motivated and community-oriented individuals to serve as Seasonal Toxics Outreach Specialists. This role supports outreach and education efforts focused on public health and environmental justice along the Spokane River.
Outreach Specialists will work closely with the Urban Forestry Program Director and Climate Justice Program Director to engage community membersparticularly those most impacted by environmental health risksthrough education surveys and relationship-building. This position is ideal for individuals who enjoy connecting with people working outdoors and contributing to meaningful public health and environmental work.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct one-on-one outreach and education with community members about Spokane River toxins and associated health risks.
Engage with diverse populations including unhoused individuals low-income communities and communities of color.
Administer surveys related to river usage fish consumption and awareness of contamination.
Share information about contaminated sites cleanup efforts and opportunities for public input (e.g. comment periods hearings)
Enter and manage survey data in spreadsheets
Deliver presentations to neighborhood councils community groups and social service organizations.
Distribute and post educational materials and health advisories
Staff outreach tables at community events and gatherings
Assist with updates to outreach materials as needed
Support the Urban Forestry Program Director and Climate Justice Program Director with additional program activities
Schedule
Approximately 20 hours per week
Seasonal position running approximately June through September (flexible start/end dates)
Evening and weekend availability required
Mix of independent and team-based work
Physical & Work Environment Requirements Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods including along the Spokane River corridor Ability to walk moderate distances and navigate uneven terrain Comfortable working in a variety of weather conditions Ability to transport outreach materials and supplies (up to 25 pounds)
Preferred Qualifications Interest in environmental justice public health or community outreach Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable initiating conversations with new people Ability to engage respectfully with diverse communities Experience with outreach education or community-based work (preferred but not required) Ability to work both independently and as part of a team Reliable adaptable and self-motivated Basic computer skills (data entry spreadsheets)
Ability to speak multiple languages (preferred but not required)
