PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Provide Athletic Training Services to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician in accordance with state athletic training practice act; prepare students for college and career by developing their skills/competencies according to a state-approved list in each course.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Graduate of an accredited college or university in an approved program of study for the preparation of health care professionals (preferred masters degree in Athletic Training.
- Must hold a certification by the National Trainers Association and must be licensed to practice in the State of Virginia.
- Completed two years of occupational experience in an area related to the area to be taught.
- Willing to take and pass one of the VDOE-approved industry credentials listed for Health and Medical Sciences
- Must possess knowledge of school division rules regulations and procedures and knowledge of Virginia High School League rules and regulations.
- Leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students teachers parents administrators and the community.
- Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions and possesses a
- Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks. Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. Respects the worth dignity and individual differences of others.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides Athletic Training Services* to student athletes under the direction of the team physician or by written referral from a physician and in accordance with state athletic training practice act.
- Maintains appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually and approved by the team physician.
- Provides athletic training services for all home athletic contests and away varsity football games. If a conflict arises between an away varsity football game and a home contest the varsity football event will supersede.
- Prepare students for college and career by developing their skills/competencies according to a state-approved list in each course.
- Design engaging lessons that inspire students to do their best work.
- Lead an active after-school chapter of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) and chaperone students attending competitions and conventions.
- Provide a safe and positive environment focused on student learning.
- Perform administrative responsibilities including managing equipment used for instruction keeping records of student competencies assigning grades and participating in school and district collaborative teams.
- Acts as liaison between family physicians and specialists the school district athletes and their parents.
- Maintains accurate records of injuries treatments and provide insurance claim forms for sports injuries treated by a physician.
- Develops and maintains a budget for the athletic training program.
- Schedules and be present for pre-participation sports physicals.
- Provides the coaches and athletic director with a list of athletes medically eligible to compete under district and state rules and regulations.
- Assists the athletic director as requested.
- Supervises and coordinates a student athletic training program.
- Be available to teach lecture or speak to classes and/or civic organizations on health related topics.
- Coordinates schedules and organizes the School Division Concussion Management Team.
- Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies.
- Assumes responsibility for adherence to all Virginia High School League district and regional rules and regulations.
- Maintains appropriate state licensure and/or national level; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth).
- Responds to telephone email and in-person requests inquiries and questions in a professional polite and responsive manner.
- Demonstrates good attendance and punctuality.
- Attends all required meetings.
- Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students staff equipment materials and facilities.
- Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials supplies and skills up-to-date.
- Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
- Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
- Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
- Complies with and supports school division policies regulations procedures and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
- Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
*Athletic Training Services: The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative and devices for the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment management treatment rehabilitation and recondition of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such as mechanical stimulation heat cold light air water electricity sound massage and the use of therapeutic exercises reconditioning exercise and fitness programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Lifting up to 75 pounds occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently. Stand walk use hands reach with hands and arms stoop kneel or crouch. Travel to home or away athletic events is required. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students staff and community members. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Regular contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
