Job Summary
The College of Communication and Information at the University of Tennessee Knoxville seeks applications and nominations for a creative and dynamic professional to fill a 12-month position of Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development (ADRF). The ADRF will provide leadership and direction for the colleges research and faculty development efforts and will report directly to the Dean of the College of Communication and Information and serve as a member of the College Leadership Team. The ADRF will also work with the Dean and the College Leadership Team on all issues related to college governance and administration including general college policy budget benchmarking strategic planning and other issues related to the management and leadership of the college. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will serve a 5-year term as ADRF subject to annual review. A cumulative 5-year review will be held prior to considering whether to appoint the individual to a second 5-year term.
The ADRF will provide leadership and direction for the colleges research endeavors. They will work closely with Research and Innovation Center (RIC) staff to coordinate college external funding efforts including grants and contracts. The ADRF will represent CCI at Associate Deans for Research and Research Council meetings and should be a recognized and highly visible scholar in their academic discipline who can work with potential funding agencies and potential collaborators to make them aware of CCIs research expertise. Regarding faculty development the Associate Dean will provide leadership and direction for the colleges tenure and promotion processes faculty hiring development for faculty of all ranks faculty annual review process and peer review of teaching. This position requires a good working relationship with the Office of the Provost. The specific duties for which the Associate Dean will have primary responsibility include:
Research
- Assist faculty with all aspects of their research activities including identifying research opportunities research integrity security and compliance components
- Considerable experience with managing grants and/or contracts including proposal writing research and collaborative team building
- Work closely with the Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives RIC Associate Director and RIC staff to coordinate faculty and graduate student research support including grants and contracts
- Collaborate with Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Student Success to enable graduate student involvement in research and funding processes as professional development
- Represent CCI at university Associate Dean for Research and Research Council meetings
Faculty Development
- Provide college-level oversight of a broad range of personnel-related matters affecting academic personnel in all of the colleges schools including tenured tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty
- Provide college-level procedural oversight of searches for faculty positions and school director positions working directly with the CCI faculty affairs support staff member
- Manage the processes associated with the review of faculty for promotion and tenure to ensure alignment with university policy and best practices
- Provide college-level oversight of the evaluation processes for faculty including retention reviews for probationary faculty annual evaluations of faculty and school directors post-tenure performance reviews of faculty and other evaluative processes
- Design implement and oversee college-wide mentoring professional development and leadership development initiatives for all full-time tenured tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty
- Serve as the colleges primary liaison to appropriate campus-level offices and committees (e.g. associate deans for faculty affairs) with responsibility for academic personnel matters and related faculty affairs
- Coordinate college-wide committee appointments and faculty/staff awards
- Represent CCI at university Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs meetings
- Oversee the collection of workload and productivity data as well as benchmarking analysis for the college
- Current faculty holding the rank of associate or full professor in the University of Tennessee System in the communication and/or information disciplines
- For both the associate and full professor ranks:
- Significant prior administrative experience within and/or outside the academy
- Demonstrated research experience in the communication and/or information disciplines
- Considerable experience with managing grants and/or contracts including proposal writing research and collaborative team building
- A substantial record of successful research funding and scholarly publication
- Strong commitment to faculty development
- Knowledge of university policies administrative structure and operating procedures
- A strong working relationship with the Office of the Provost and with RIC staff
- Demonstrated research teaching and service excellence
- Strong organizational leadership and interpersonal communication skills
- Associate professor applicants must demonstrate a record of scholarly achievement that puts them on track for timely promotion to full professor to be considered
