Job Summary
Overview
Evaluate and provide music therapy program to assigned classrooms. Conduct music sessions which are appropriate to the developmental and social-emotional level of the assigned students. Must incorporate movement instruments and song.
Responsibilities
STANDARD 1: Professional Duties
- Implement a music curriculum based on students developmental needs.
- Provide music therapy to assigned classes/individual students to foster music appreciation.
- Select and adapt music consistent with students age culture and preferences as well as musical instruments and equipment consistent with strengths and needs of the student.
- Encourage students to take part in the session and support them by responding musically.
- Encourage students to use musical instruments such as percussion and voice to express themselves.
- Help students explore the world of sound and to create a musical language of their own.
- Improvise with music as a reaction to what the student is communicating.
- Design construct alter and provide students with therapy to promote maximum independence.
- Lead and conduct school chorus (Brookville site only).
- Complete lesson plans and goals for classrooms monthly.
- Reports progress for each assigned classroom quarterly.
- Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the music therapy program and implement changes based on the findings.
- Consult with Speech Therapists to foster individual speech goals through music media.
- Consult with Behaviorists to reinforce desired behavioral goals through music media.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity level interests and needs of
the students. - Remain current in all areas of children/adolescent pop culture music trends.
- Demonstrate knowledge of job responsibilities.
- Develop and implement appropriate strategies for students to participate in music activities.
- Complete and maintain all required paperwork in a timely and appropriate manner.
- Maintain appropriate professional standards in interactions with families.
- Demonstrate the ability to recognize problems that occur and report them immediately.
- Demonstrate flexibility and is readily adaptable to change.
- Demonstrate effective time management.
- Implement behavior intervention plans during music sessions on individualized students.
- Provide lunch coverage and assist with bussing as required by Supervisor or Administrator.
- Perform additional related duties including classroom coverage as requested by Supervisor or Administrator.
STANDARD 2: Environment Management
- Responsible for the health and safety of children during music classes.
- Maintain a healthy safe and attractive environment.
- Oversee and manage classroom aides during push-in music classes.
STANDARD 3: Professional Behavior
- Cooperate and conduct self in manner appropriate to school education setting.
- Adhere to program specific policies and procedures.
- Participate in program-wide activities and act in an appropriate manner
- Participate in activities and seek support to enhance knowledge in areas pertinent to students in the school.
STANDARD 4: Professional Development
- Attend and participate in required in-services and staff development in an appropriate manner.
- Attend and participate in supervision and implement recommendations appropriately.
- Collaborate with each students clinical service providers to ensure a comprehensive program for each student.
STANDARD 5: Adhere to general policies of the organization/regulators including:
- Code of Ethical Conduct
- Emergency/disaster preparedness protocols.
- Departmental in-service education program requirements.
- Fire/Safety prevention protocols.
- Policies and procedures (attendance punctuality appearance professional attitude etc.)
- Quality improvement activities.
- Job related self-development education activities.
- Infection control practices and procedures.
- Regulatory requirements and annual physical examination and Mantoux testing.
STANDARD 6: Performs other related duties as required
- Demonstrate understanding of the needs of students and visitors for each specific age group.
- Address safety and psychological needs of the special age groups as appropriate in the performance of work activities.
- Address the needs of special groups hearing impaired physically challenged and various issues relating to the program and facility.
- Maintain child family and employee confidentiality.
- Is consistently courteous and considerate in person on the telephone and in interactions with children and others such as family visitors venders and other employees.
- Exhibit the At Your Service attitude i.e. smiles uses positive eye contact and is friendly open and approachable.
- Respond quickly to student and/or parent/guardians request refers to appropriate member of the care team if necessary and informs supervisor of actions taken.
- Promote positive co-worker relationships teamwork and cooperation.
- Work collaboratively and is respectful of others.
- Take individual responsibility for providing outstanding Service Quality.
STANDARD 7: Cultural Competencies
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures ranges of disability genders ethnicity and races.

- Demonstrate the ability to successfully deliver culturally responsive services to students and families.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree or higher in Music Therapy or Creative Arts Masters degree required.
- Must be a certified Music Therapist or Licensed Creative Arts Therapist with a minimum of one (1) year related experience working with the developmentally disabled population. Working knowledge of music curriculum/activities appropriate in a school setting. Must have a working knowledge of assessment and treatment activities appropriate for the developmental and social level of the assigned students.
Physical Demands:
- Mobility: Ability to move about the school campus and community settings including classrooms offices and vocational sites. including standing walking bending and reaching.
- Physical: May occasionally be required to lift and carry instructional materials or equipment (up to 25 lbs) ability to assist students with mobility needs if required.
- Manual Dexterity: Frequent use of hands and fingers for writing typing and handling educational devices instructional materials assistive technology and computers.
- Visual and auditory ability: Must possess sufficient vision and hearing to monitor student activities observe student performance and respond to needs including safety in a timely manner.
- Environment: Work is performed in a school setting and may include community-based environments.
