General Description:
The Office of Academics is responsible for advancing the learning agenda for Boston Public School and providing the direction and guidance for schools. The Boston Public Schools is seeking a dynamic innovative leader to work collaboratively with staff families students and communities as the Chief of Teaching and Learning and to lead the District in implementing its Instructional Vision. BPS is committed to implementing inclusive rigorous and culturally/ linguistically sustaining PK-12 instructional programs that support the development of the whole child.
The Chief of Teaching and Learning is charged with overseeing the strategy resource procurement and development of educators so that each student is successful in each BPS classroom. This includes but is not limited to refinement of the existing district approach to high quality instructional materials establishing a coordinated professional learning strategy and developing a strategy to scale effective school-based implementation of multi-tiered systems of support.
To achieve these outcomes the Chief of Teaching and Learning will hold district and school leaders accountable to our students and ensure alignment across varied Academic offices to innovate and transform learning for all of our students. The Chief of Teaching and Learning will work collaboratively with district leaders including leaders in the Office of Multicultural and Multilingual Learners Office of Data and Accountability Department of Schools and the Office of Specialized Services to create district-wide systems that ensure all our students have access to quality instruction and are attending high-quality schools that can support all of our students.
Responsibilities
The Chief of Teaching and Learning is responsible for the following key leadership functions:
Strategic Leadership & Instructional Vision
- Visionary Planning: Provide executive leadership in the strategic planning and implementation of the BPS Instructional Vision
- Equity Initiatives: Lead key district initiatives interconnected to the instructional experiences across BPS
- Innovation & Scaling: Pilot innovative approaches to personalized learning and scale effective models across the district including but not limited to scaling of emerging technologies
- Systemic Accountability: Lead the development and implementation of tools and measurement frameworks to assess academic performance and student achievement
Departmental Oversight & Staff Development
- Portfolio Management: Oversee the work and strategic direction of the following departments: MTSS Early Childhood Humanities Professional Learning Teacher Leadership Health and Wellness STEM and World Languages
- Personnel Management: Supervise support coach and evaluate staff within the department modeling professional competencies in all interactions
- Professional Learning: Participate in and lead the Districts professional learning strategy
- Adult Learning: Utilize change management and adult learning strategies to develop tools for staff specifically focusing on culturally linguistically and abilities-diverse student populations
Collaboration & Operational Excellence
- Cross-Functional Partnership: Work collaboratively with district leaders to design student-centered instructional experiences and ensure all students benefit from high-quality instruction
- Fiscal Responsibility: Monitor budget including grants and departmental procedures to ensure sound fiscal systems.
- External Engagement: Establish positive relationships with families students and communities and seek external partnerships to maximize resource allocation
- Professional Modeling: Lead with effective communication and problem-solving protocols that reflect a deep commitment to student success and inspiring transformation
Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Masters Degree in Education Educational Leadership or a related field (Doctorate preferred).
- Minimum of three (3) years of senior-level leadership experience preferably within a large-scale urban school district.
- Deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges within the Boston Public Schools or a similar urban educational environment.
Instructional Leadership & Pedagogical Mastery
- Expert knowledge of Evidence-Based Practices specific to Literacy Math and Science paired with culturally and linguistically sustaining practice across PK-12
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement professional development and adult learning activities that address the intersection of academics behavior bias and student success
- Proven track record of improving outcomes for diverse student populations including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
Strategic & Operational Execution
- Experience developing and maintaining monitoring systems for quality improvement and data-driven decision-making.
- Ability to manage high-stakes multi-departmental projects simultaneously while navigating rapidly shifting priorities and targets.
- Strong organizational skills with an emphasis on attention to detail and sound budgetary/grant management.
Adaptive & Interpersonal Leadership
- Exceptional interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build trusting relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders (staff families and community partners).
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills with the ability to translate complex academic strategies into clear actionable goals.
- A strong commitment to self-reflection ongoing professional learning and the ability to work both independently and as a collaborative team member.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual/Biliterate; successful experience working with and advocating for linguistically diverse communities.
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a related field.
