LOCATION: Office Base is Belfast. These are hybrid roles and the successful candidate will balance office working with home working.
PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: Up to 56200 depending on relevant skills knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
These roles involve the close management of a team and complex operations on a day-to-day basis. Some home working can be accommodated but a minimum of three days per week in the office during working hours is expected.
These roles will also be required to be the point of contact for out-of-hours and weekend cover.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
BBC Northern Ireland is part of the Nations division producing a wide range of output across all TV radio and online platforms.
The Business Operations team provide the skilled craft personnel such as camera and audio operators as well as technical and production facilities that are essential to the production of high quality output for our audiences.
As an Operations Manager you will work very closely with the BBCNI Business Operations management team to deliver a highly professional and value-for-money service. You will be accountable for the efficient management development performance and delivery of the relevant craft team (either camera or audio operators) who work across all studio and outside broadcast areas on a 24/7 basis. You will liaise extensively with a wide range of clients including news and current affairs sport general programmes and independent producers. You will ensure high levels of service quality of output stakeholder engagement and scheduling performance.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:
- Provide the point of contact for BBCNI Business Operations camera or audio departments on all service delivery issues.
- Responsible for pricing and pitching service provision in conjunction with other members of the management team.
- As part of the management team responsible for the strategic development of services skills and solutions.
- Deliver effective service provision ensuring a seamless delivery of operational staff and facilities liaising closely with production technology and other operational stakeholders obtaining regular feedback on performance levels and seeking to consistently improve the quality of the service.
- Responsible for the line management training performance development and discipline of staff.
- Maintain and develop craft standards operational standards and working practices within the team initiating and developing comprehensive training programmes for staff to ensure that they have the skills and proficiencies required to undertake their role effectively.
- Liaise with local support departments to ensure that all technical facilities are kept fully operational and that future needs are investigated and suitable kit bought in good time.
- Maintain and develop good industrial relations. To participate in management/union meetings and to be involved in consultation and negotiations with the unions
- Ensure that the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act Working Time Directive and other workplace related legislation are observed; responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are completed appropriate and meet BBC standards; responsible for ensuring appropriate method statements are reviewed and fit for purpose.
- Responsible for ensuring staff have their training and development needs assessed on a regular basis and that action takes place to provide them with the skills and training required to undertake their role effectively.
- Contribute to the development of the training plan to ensure that the training remains focused to the business need.
- Provide advice on staff technology and working practices within the department to production areas and to assist in meeting short and long-term objectives.
- Contribute to the management and operation of effective scheduling budgetary control and cost recovery business processes and systems for the department ensuring all business targets are met.
- Play an active role in assisting departmental head and other managers with the business plan for the team and to be accountable for ensuring that revenue expenditure within the department is contained within the limits set out.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
- Operational experience in output with good knowledge of production processes systems and workflows.
- Good knowledge of staff and facilities scheduling principles and business processes.
- Experience of line management performance management staff supervision and staff training and development including staff appraisals (BBC My Conversation).
- Good knowledge of employment and industrial relations legislation policies and processes.
- Good editorial awareness and broad knowledge of issues appropriate to an operational department.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to effectively communicate and liaise with a wide range of stakeholders.
- Commitment to BBC values.
- The ability to contribute to departmental strategy with up-to-date knowledge of the strategy and direction being taken by output areas.
- A good knowledge and commitment to providing output of technical high quality.
- Excellent IT skills.
