JOB TITLE: Volunteer
TYPE OF CONTRACT: Voluntary Assignment
UNIT/DIVISION: Sustainable Supply Chain Supply Chain and Delivery Division
DUTY STATION (City Country): Rome Italy
WORKING ARRANGEMENT (in person/remote/hybrid): Hybrid
SUPERVISOR: Jacqueline Oestreicher
DURATION: 3 Months

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

The Sustainable Supply Chain unit works across the Supply Chain & Delivery division (SCD) and the wider Supply Chain function work to minimize the potential negative environmental impact of WFPs supply chain interventions. The unit ensures that WFP operations are adapted to and resilient against the effects of climate change and other megatrends.

The Sustainable Supply Chain team (SSC) focuses on reducing supply chain emissions and waste. The majority of WFPs emissions originate from food production. WFP uses a composite emissions factor to measure its footprint. As different farmers implement different practices that impact their specific environmental footprints WFP needs visibility into its upstream supply chain. Through its local and regional food procurement policy (LRFP) WFP has collected farmer location data from multiple suppliers. For specific LRFP contracts there is a requirement for each trader to complete an input form containing the locations of its farmers which is emailed to the relevant stakeholder. Although the collection of these data are critical this has led to a decentralized process where much of the data goes unanalysed.

This volunteer assignment will focus on analysing trader data and developing recommendations on how to systematically capture and integrate this data to better refine WFPs emissions baseline.

This role offers hands-on experience for analysis in supply chain sustainability and provides a unique opportunity to translate academic skills into real-world sustainability challenges in the humanitarian sector.

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Document and map the current process for how sustainability data is collected and reviewed.

  • Support collecting and centralizing available sustainability and LRFP related data.

  • Assist in identifying a process to systematically collect and analyse submission forms.

  • Support with crafting preliminary data insights using external databases and tools that measure emissions.

  • Prepare draft visualizations (charts tables dashboards) to support reporting & presentations.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

  • Comprehensive analysis and synthesis of smallholder farmer traceability reports identifying key data points gaps and patterns across countries or project submissions.

  • Develop a consolidated recommendation outlining how WFP can systematically capture structure and analyse essential traceability data using practical tools and templates suitable for field teams.

  • Prepare a structured report and summary presentation on how the collected data can enable the use of advanced carbon-emission calculation tools including which data fields are relevant and where current gaps exist.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Education: Bachelors degree (completed or in progress) in engineering science or other relevant fields from a recognized university is required.

Experience: The volunteer should have experience in data analysis and visualization using the Microsoft Office suite along with a basic understanding of technological workflows. Familiarity with carbon accounting whether through academic projects or coursework is preferred.

Knowledge & Skills: The role requires a basic understanding of supply chain environmental sustainability along with data mapping and workflow analysis skills. Analytical thinking and the ability to structure data are essential. Reporting and organizational skills will help structure findings and familiarity with supply chain operations is a plus.

Languages: Fluency in English (level C) is required. Fluency in other WFP official languages is a plus.
