BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The Sustainable Supply Chain unit works across the Supply Chain & Delivery division (SCD) and the wider Supply Chain function work to minimize the potential negative environmental impact of WFPs supply chain interventions. The unit ensures that WFP operations are adapted to and resilient against the effects of climate change and other megatrends.
The Sustainable Supply Chain team (SSC) focuses on reducing supply chain emissions and waste. The majority of WFPs emissions originate from food production. WFP is working to ensure that sustainably produced food enters its supply chain. For this to happen WFP needs to define which aspects of sustainable production are most relevant for the organization. Once defined WFP can seek out external partners who work with farmers and traders to implement these sustainable production practices and procure from them. WFP also needs to understand these organizations business models to determine who would be the best strategic partner while ensuring alignment across efficiency reliability and sustainability.
This role offers hands-on experience for analysis in supply chain sustainability and provides a unique opportunity to apply academic skills to real-world sustainability challenges in the humanitarian sector.
DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct desk research and informational interviews on organizations that work on sustainable agricultural production across Africa in markets strategic for WFPs procurement (including but not limited to types of agricultural practices they promote how their products enter the market collaborations with other off-taking entities).
Conduct desk research on the economic and environmental costs and benefits of the various agricultural practices identified.
Support defining how WFP can categorize different types of environmental sustainability practices that can be implemented at farm level and tracked through trader engagement.
Assist in developing guidance to be integrated into WFPs operational manuals and strategies.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Report and PowerPoint summarizing the comprehensive analysis on the state of the market for sustainably produced commodities in selected African markets and recommendation on who WFP could procure from highlighting the benefits and tradeoffs.
Database of suppliers from whom WFP can procure sustainably produced commodities categorized by impact type geography commodity and market availability.
Guidance to be incorporated into the procurement manual on how to consider integrating sustainably produced commodities into procurement plans.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Education: Bachelors degree (completed or in progress) in political science business environmental policy or other relevant fields from a recognized university is required.
Experience: The Volunteer should have experience in research analysis and synthesis alongside the Microsoft Office suite. Familiarity with supply chain sustainability topics and food systems is preferred.
Knowledge & Skills: The role requires a basic understanding of environmental sustainability food systems and supply chains. Analytical thinking and the ability to conduct interviews with field officers are essential. Reporting and organizational skills will help structure findings and familiarity with supply chain operations is a plus.
Languages: Be fluent in English (level C). Fluency in other WFP official languages is a plus.
