BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT


The position is located in the Maritime Transport and Insurance Law Branch (LEGM) of WFPs Legal Office with its Headquarters in Rome Italy. Under the direct supervision of the Legal Officer the Volunteer will assist the legal team in carrying out legal research drafting legal documents preparing relevant materials for internal discussions and meetings with stakeholders reviewing contracts and agreements.


The assignment also aims to enhance the offices efficiency and to foster collaboration by providing cross-functional support to the other two branches of the Legal Office namely the Contractual and Constitutional Law Branch (LEGC) and the Administrative and Employment Law Branch (LEGA).

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Under the direct supervision of the Legal Officer the Volunteer will:

  • Conduct research into various legal issues in an international context particularly in the fields of procurement of food goods and services shipping aviation logistics service provision construction and real estate.

  • Assist with other legal matters as required including: prepare legal briefs opinions memoranda and correspondence; assist in the drafting review and negotiation of commercial contracts and agreements with UN agencies international and national partners and vendors.

  • Assist in the preparation pursuit and negotiation of claims

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

EXPECTED OUTCOMES


At the end of the assignment the intern would be expected to have improved their skills in the following areas:

  • Legal analysis skills;

  • Legal drafting skills (expository advocacy and contract drafting); and

  • Inter-personal skills required for working in a dynamic legal office dealing with in-house clients and maneuvering in a large UN organization.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Education: The Volunteer must be currently enrolled in or about to begin the final year of an undergraduate law programme (first degree); or be currently enrolled in a graduate law programme (second degree e.g. masters or JD); or have
graduated from an undergraduate or graduate law all cases the Volunteer must have attended a course for credit towards the law degree.

Experience: Entry-level with exposure to/interest in research review analysis and drafting. Previous legal experience in a law firm in-house or the legal office of another international organization is preferred but not required.

Language: Be fluent in English. Fluency in other WFP official and working languages is an asset.
