Position Summary

Performs a variety of responsibilities related to landscaping and grounds maintenance including mowing grass planting and trimming trees and bushes marking athletic fields laying grass seed and repairing fences and concrete. Performs winter and other maintenance of sidewalks parking lots and roadways.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applies fertilizers weed killers and other products used in the maintenance and construction of lawns and athletic fields.
  • Performs landscape and grounds maintenance responsibilities such as mowing grass trimming bushes and trees marking athletic fields repairing fences snow removal plowing salting and concrete.
  • Installs/replaces signs and striping parking lots.
  • Performs regular inspections and repairs necessary for basic preventative maintenance on buildings grounds and equipment.
  • Evaluates and tests new products equipment and processes.
  • Responds to questions complaints and needs of school district staff students parents and the public in order to provide information and assistance.
  • Prepare records and service reports of job time and materials expended on the work orders.
  • Performs other related duties as directed by supervisor.

Education:

This position requires a high school diploma or general education degree (G.E.D.).

Experience:

  • One year of related experience in landscape and grounds maintenance preferred.

Certificates Licenses or Registrations:

  • State of Michigan Commercial drivers license with Class A w/Air Brake endorsement preferred; Required to obtain license within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to pass and obtain medical certificate in order to comply with State of MI requirements.
  • Required to obtain Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification within 12 months of hire.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of mechanical aptitude required.
  • Knowledge of grounds keeping landscaping and how to safety use pesticides and chemicals required.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of works rules of composition and grammar required.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills required.
  • Basic knowledge of methods materials tools equipment occupational hazards and safety precautions related to grounds maintenance required.

Abilities:

  • Ability to read and interpret district policies guidelines handbook and government regulations required.
  • Ability to read and comprehend safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals required.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and routine reports required.
  • Ability to successfully complete State of Michigan required driving license tests required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written oral or diagram form required.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations required.
  • Ability to effectively use basic computer software applications required.
  • Ability to perform job duties using various types of equipment including but not limited to; lawnmowers saws trimmers rakes shovels gator type vehicles snow blowers plows etc required.
  • Ability to perform job duties using a variety of pesticides and chemicals required.
  • Ability to perform job duties in extreme hot and/or cold temperatures required.
  • Ability to read write and communicate effectively in English to perform essential job duties including but not limited to understanding and following safety instructions responding appropriately to emergency situations completing documentation and interacting with English-speaking staff students community and supervisors required.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to climb push/pull lift bend walk stand sit twist turn stoop kneel crouch crawl reach use hands to finger handle or feel; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision and ability to adjust focus especially due to concentration when reading instructions.

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.
