Job Duties
Under the general direction of the Solicitor General a John Marshall Fellow is responsible for representing the interests of the Commonwealth in federal and state courts including high-profile matters of national and statewide importance. This position is responsible for handling appellate litigation including preparing briefs and presenting oral arguments.
Drafts appellate briefs in state and federal court;
Revises legal briefs drafted by other attorneys to ensure high-quality written advocacy;
Presents oral arguments primarily in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Supreme Court of Virginia;
Recommends to the Solicitor General whether the Commonwealth should draft or join amicus briefs with other state Attorneys General on issues of mutual interest;
Consults with the Solicitor General and others within the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) and the executive branch of the Commonwealths government regarding pending and potential appellate litigation and the effect of rulings;
Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be able to complete a background check;
Must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar have admission pending or be able to waive into the Virginia State Bar promptly after joining the Office.

Exceptional legal research skills;
Exceptional oral advocacy skills;
Superior analytical ability objectivity and maturity of judgment;
Ability to multitask keep calm under pressure and treat everyone with respect.
Additional Considerations
Completed appellate clerkship in federal or Virginia court strongly preferred
