Substitute Nurse
District wide
Job Goal: To provide temporary professional nursing services that ensure the safety health and well-being of students during the school day allowing for a school environment conducive to learning.
Qualifications:
- Current license to practice professional nursing (RN) in the State of Maine.
- Minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of experience as a professional registered nurse.
- Successful completion of a Maine Department of Education background check (CHRC).
- Approval of the Department of Education to work as a substitute school nurse.
- Associate Degree or higher in Nursing.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Clinical Care & Assessment
- Provides health assessments and nursing diagnoses for students presenting with illness or injury.
- Identifies health findings that fall outside the normal range and takes appropriate clinical action.
- Utilizes existing health resources and protocols to provide immediate care to pupils.
- Implements the school medication policy and procedures including the administration of scheduled and PRN medications.
2. Crisis & Emergency Management
- Provides crisis intervention for acute illness injury and emotional disturbances.
- Will refer students with emotional and mental health disturbances to school counseling staff as needed
- Maintains and utilizes first aid supplies and emergency protocols as established by the district.
- Assists in the control of communicable diseases through early detection surveillance and reporting of contagious symptoms.
3. Communication & Coordination
- Interprets the immediate health status of pupils to school personnel and parents/guardians as necessary following FERPA privacy laws.
- Serves as a health resource person to classroom teachers and administrators.
- Maintains accurate and confidential daily health records and documentation of care provided.
- Collaborates with office staff to ensure student health needs are met.
Terms of Employment: Per-diem/as-needed basis. Rate of pay as determined by the Board of Directors.
