Job Summary

Full-Time and Permanent; Exempt; 7.33 Hours/Day; 200 Days/Year; 10 Months/Year

Minimum Qualifications

  • Collegiate professional with endorsement in special education visual impairment.
  • Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) preferred.
  • Eligible for or in possession of appropriate Virginia teaching license.
  • Transcription of student materials as well as continuous walking carrying bending sitting standing stooping lifting and driving.
  • Work involves risk at times from interaction with special needs students which may include accompanying emotional or physical impairments requiring special techniques.
  • Must use universal precautions at avoiding contagious disease.
  • Employee in this position must display a great deal of flexibility creativity and initiative.

Examples of Duties

  • Providesdirectandindirectinstructionandsupporttostudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Interpretsandexplainseyecondition(s)andtheensuingeducationalimplicationstoschoolstaffresponsibleforinstructionofstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Developsandimplementsindividualizededucationalplansforstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Conductsfunctionalvisionevaluationsforenrolled andreferredstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Workscooperativelywithotherprofessionalstaffmemberswhoareinvolvedintheeducationalprogrammingofstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Confersfrequentlywithparentsschoolstaffandothercommunityprofessionalsregardingtheeducationalbehavioralandsocialneeds ofthestudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Usesthemostappropriateeducationalcommunicationmedium(regularprintlargeprint brailleaural)oracombinationforstudentswithvisualimpairmentsasdeterminedbytheIEP.

  • Providesfortheacquisitionandinstructionofadaptiveequipmentandmaterialstobeutilizedbystudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • ActsasaliaisonwiththeVirginiaDepartmentfortheVisuallyHandicappedunderacooperativeagreementwiththisagencyandNPS.

  • Maintainsaclearconciseandtimelyrecordkeepingsystem.

  • Providesapositiveeducationalenvironmentforstudents.

  • Collectsdatatodemonstrateeducationalprogressofstudents.

  • Preparesinstructionalmaterialsforstudentuse.

  • Supervisesstudentsintheclassroomgeneralschoolbuildingandcommunity.

Knowledge Skill and Ability

  • Considerableknowledgeoftheimplicationsofvisualimpairmentsastheyrelatetothegrowthdevelopmentandeducationofstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Communicateseffectivelybothorallyandinwrittenform.

  • ConsiderableknowledgeoftherulesandprinciplesofliteraryandNemethbraillecodeswiththeabilitytoinstructandtranscribematerialsineachcode.

  • Knowledgeofthefunctionanduseofassistiveaccommodativedevices forusebythestudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • ExhibitsaworkingknowledgeofStateandFederalregulationsandguidelines.

  • Abilitytoaccuratelymeasureobservereport andrecordlearningprogressofstudents.

  • Abilitytocoordinateandimplementanitinerantcaseloadservingstudentswithvisualimpairments.

  • Knowledgeofbasicorientationandmobilitytechniquesusedwithvisuallyimpairedpersons.

  • Knowledgeoffunctionallowvisionandlowvisionaidsprescribedforusebystudentswithvisualimpairments.
