General Summary Primary Functions
The primary purpose of this position is the strategic leadership of A Federal Credit Unions consumer credit underwriting and indirect lending programs including operational oversight of the Indirect Processing department. As part of the lending leadership team this role will be responsible for driving business strategies around automated underwriting process efficiencies dealer engagement and indirect program expansion. This role will also serve as the primary product owner for Consumer Lendings automated underwriting model and credit guidelines and utilize complex credit analytics to manage model performance predictive modeling portfolio performance and product/program profitability. The Director of Consumer Credit & Indirect Programs will be a key participant in strategic projects and initiatives for the lending department while working closely with internal partners across the organization and serving as a primary point of contact for external relationships such as dealers aggregators and credit bureaus. This role requires up to 25% travel for visiting current and prospective indirect partner locations.
1. Consumer Credit & Underwriting
- Support the consumer underwriting manager in the operational management of the direct and indirect underwriting teams including hiring terminations evaluations coaching and employee development.
- Monitor automated underwriting analytics and manage instant decision strategies across all consumer loan products.
- Manage analytics around consumer underwriting guidelines periodic validation of decision rules and credit attributes and implement updates as needed.
- Work with internal analysts and/or third-party vendors to build out and continuously refresh credit reporting and analytics including automated underwriting model performance custom score validations predictive attribute analysis profitability and risk-based pricing analysis.
- Facilitate consumer credit committee meetings including review of key delinquency charge off and profitability trends for direct and indirect portfolios.
- Provide regular data-driven guidance and feedback to underwriting teams on credit risk tolerance portfolio performance and market trends.
- Work with Collections team on complex collection repossession and workout loan situations.
- Underwrite consumer loan applications on an escalation/exception basis including employee loans.
- Manage lending authority procedure and controls around approval limits lending authority administration and audits.
2. Dealer Relations & Indirect Program Management
- Support the consumer underwriting manager in the relationship management function for indirect dealerships including dealer onboarding and terminations annual due diligence regional business strategies indirect program development and building out dealer-level performance analytics monitoring and operational controls.
- Lead initiatives for enhancements to dealer and aggregator relationships dealer engagement programs operational processes dealer reserve structures and portfolio profitability efforts.
- Manage indirect lending program performance including application and origination volume look-to-book net yield missing titles delinquency and charge off monitoring.
- Participate in lending rate committee discussions review market and pricing analytics and create and present indirect rate and program proposals.
- Oversee ongoing dealer relationship management process including dealer scorecard reports monitoring of first payment defaults straw deals delinquency compliance and other red flag issues.
- Participate in industry events and site visits to existing or prospective indirect dealer or partner locations.
3. Indirect Processing
- Support the indirect processing supervisor in the operational management of the indirect processing team including hiring terminations evaluations coaching and employee development.
- Manage departmental metrics pipeline turnaround times and service level standards for processing and funding indirect contracts.
- Evaluate and execute continuous process improvements to enhance team member experience and operational efficiency.
- Coordinate with Accounting on monthly dealer reserve reconciliation and remittance process.
- Manage funding exceptions and complex processing and contract issues including fraud situations.
- Work with Collections and other departments as needed on dealer collections and buyback situations for indirect loans.
- Support the Indirect Processing team with processing funding and resolving funding issues as needed.
4. Miscellaneous
- Assist direct teams other departments and branches to resolve disputes and escalations from members and dealers and any other service-related issues.
- Complete overrides and approvals as needed within established policies and procedures.
- Participate in outside credit union sponsored activities and community/education events to increase credit union awareness.
- Serve as team member or project lead in organizational or departmental projects.
- Perform other duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience
- Bachelors degree required (business finance accounting or related field highly preferred).
- Ten years of lending-based financial institution experience required.
- Seven years of consumer loan underwriting experience required including vehicle and unsecured loans.
- Three years of management or leadership experience required.
- Three years of dealer relationship management and/or loan processing experience preferred.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
- Demonstrated team leadership abilities.
- Advanced knowledge of consumer and indirect vehicle lending including products processing regulations quality assurance and portfolio management.
- Advanced understanding of consumer credit and loan portfolio management concepts including credit scores ability to repay delinquency charge offs vintage analysis amortization and net yield.
- Advanced understanding of automated underwriting models decisioning logic model governance and validation.
- Advanced knowledge of operational internal and security controls applicable to a lending environment.
- Excellent time management and written and verbal communication including presentation skills.
- Advanced MS Office experience.
- Strong data analytics skills (formulas data tables pivot tables data visualization etc.).
- Strong strategic thinking project management and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with multi-state indirect lending programs collections and vehicle titling laws.
- Problem-solving skills including dealing with potential conflict.
- Ability to travel (drive a vehicle) and work outside of home/office up to 25% of the time.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with flexibility to adapt to change.
- Attention to detail in order to provide accurate relevant and timely information to internal and external members.
