Job Summary

Grounds Assistant in Facilities supports their success by ensuring that the grounds are maintained to the highest possible standards. The Grounds Assistants play an important role as ambassadors for the university. Their daily contact with students faculty staff and visitors helps the university to be a welcoming and friendly place.

Facilities is now hiring 3 Casual Grounds Assistants to support our Facilities Grounds Team over the growing season (May to October).

Job Description

Reporting to the Grounds Manager the Casual Grounds Assistant will assist the Grounds Team with daily care and treatments necessary to maintain the campus grounds making sure they are in good and safe condition for the staff students and visitors who frequent campus.

The successful candidates must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions and complete physically demanding work.

Candidate success is based on a good work ethic ability to learn and practice new skills embracing Facilities mission and values and respecting diversity and promoting inclusion in the workplace.

Key Responsibilities
Work safely in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its applicable regulations as well as adhering to Queens and Facilities Safety Policies and Procedures.
Maintain the campus grounds by trimming grass cutting grass with push lawn mower pulling weeds picking up litter watering mulching and various related tasks assigned.
Be accountable for timely and effective completion of assigned tasks.
Be a positive team member who recognizes the value of diversity in the workplace.
Safe operation of Grounds vehicles to various worksites around campus.

Qualifications
Horticultural experience an asset.
Experience safely operating line trimmers leaf blowers and push lawn mowers.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to work in small groups.
Ability to work effectively and efficiently with the grounds team and other trades.
Ability to perform the physical demands of the job.*
This position requires successful candidates to hold and maintain a valid Ontario Class Full G Drivers License and can be insured to drive on behalf of the university under the universitys Auto Insurance Policy.
This position requires successful candidates to produce a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Sector Screen as a condition of employment.
