Job Description

The purpose of this internship is to provide a learning experience related to high-profile policy development implementation and project management relating to critical criminal justice and homelessness issues. This opportunity provides interns with firsthand experience with a wide variety of data analytics and policy research programs working alongside senior staff in the Mayors addition to county-level work the role will also connect the intern with State and local partners to pursue shared goals.


The Mayors Office oversees a range of policy initiatives special projects program partnerships and funding collaborations that help achieve the Mayors vision. We work with local governments and with national state and private sector partners to develop collective action around regional challenges entrenched social problems and unique opportunities to maximize the public good. This currentlyincludes policy initiatives on regional development public asset management homelessness and housing criminal justice reform and child and family stability.


Applicants should have a strong interest in data science statistical analysis policy development project management and policy/program implementation. Work is primarily Monday through Friday with flexible hours to accommodate a school schedule. There may be occasional work on the weekends.


Applicants must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor OR Graduate program.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


Gather interpret and present research and data that inform policy and project outcomes.
Aid in the creation and implementation of a project dashboard to coordinate data sharing across County teams.
Actively assist with projects as needed including responding to priorities and resourcing needs as they shift over the lifecycle of the project.
Prepare complex analyses briefings and other documents circulated to elected officials and stakeholders.
Engage in the continuous improvement of project management processes and procedures.
Participate in professional development programs developed by Intern Program Managers.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Data analytical skills to analyze project goals ongoing metrics and results.
Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities in a focused and timely manner.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in a team environment while balancing individual work.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Research design knowledge/skills.
Familiarity with common data analytics tools (Python/Pandas SQL Power BI)
Experience with Microsoft 365 products (especially SharePoint) Smartsheet and project management software.
Students with a focus in computer/data science statistical analysis or political science preferred.


PAY: $18.00/hour


START DATE: The internship begins in May 2026 (start date flexible) and ends in August 2026. There may be the possibility of an extension.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS


Interns will work from the Salt Lake County Government Complex with the opportunity for remote hours within the state of Utah. They will be provided with a computer and an email account. Interns may be asked to attend meetings off-site at other government facilities or in the community. Interns may be sitting for long periods of time at a computer.
