Job Summary

Student Support Coordinator (SSC)

Summary of position:The Student Support Coordinator (SSC) coordinates the day-to-day implementation of NMIS student support programs including Special Education Section 504 the Student Assistance Team (SAT) and gifted services. The SSC manages evaluation coordination documentation systems compliance timelines and meeting processes associated with these programs.

The SSC works under the supervision of the Student Support Director (SSD) who retains overall responsibility for the schools student support systems and regulatory reporting. The SSC carries out program coordination responsibilities delegated by the SSD and collaborates with principals teachers and student support staff to ensure that required services accommodations and interventions are implemented and documented appropriately.

This role is non-administrative and does not include staff evaluation authority or administrative discipline authority.

Role Boundaries and Authority: The Student Support Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the implementation of student support systems and ensuring that required processes documentation and timelines are maintained. The SSC manages the operational coordination of student support processes including meeting scheduling documentation management compliance monitoring and communication among staff and families.

The SSC does not supervise staff conduct formal evaluations or serve as an acting administrator. Supervision evaluation and employment decisions for student support staff remain the responsibility of the Student Support Director.

Student support staff such as Special Education Teachers (SET) Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) and the School Social Worker coordinate their day-to-day work related to student plans and services through the SSC for operational matters. Formal supervision and evaluation of these staff members remain the responsibility of the Student Support Director.

Instructional supervision and general student discipline remain the responsibility of the Elementary and Middle School Principals. The SSC collaborates with principals to ensure that teachers are aware of and implementing required accommodations and services associated with student support plans.

The SSC exercises influence through coordination documentation management compliance monitoring and collaboration with staff across departments.

The Student Support Coordinator is obligated to respond to student misconduct in accordance with the NMIS Student Discipline Matrix. The SSC is expected to intervene directly at the level of authority assigned to their role and escalate concerns when behavior exceeds that authority. The SSC may implement Level 0 and Level 1 disciplinary responses as defined in the Student Discipline Matrix.



FLSA Status: Exempt (professional)

School Personnel Act Classification: Licensed Professional (Instructional or Administrative license acceptable)

Department and Overseeing Director: Student Support Department Student Support Director (SSD)

Immediate supervisor: Student Support Director (SSD)

Compensation: Salaried according to placement on NMIS Teacher Salary Schedule. See Appendix 1. Additional compensation structures may apply as determined by the Head of School.

Hours: Must be present on campus during the teacher workday (8:00am3:45pm with 30-minute lunch). Required on-campus dates include all teacher workdays plus additional days before and after the school year as assigned.

Certification/Educational Qualifications:

  • Current trainings in accordance with NMIS Employee Handbook and Governing Council Policy
  • Current background check in compliance with school policy
  • Valid New Mexico Public Education Department license appropriate for the duties of the position (e.g. Special Education instructional support provider or administrative license).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and state requirements related to
    • Special Education
    • Section 504
    • Student Assistance Team processes
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex documentation systems and regulatory timelines
  • Strong collaboration organization and communication skills
  • Familiarity with school student information systems (SIS) and NOVA reporting processes
  • Experience coordinating student services systems preferred
  • Trained in restraint seclusion and de-escalation techniques for students in a K-12 setting.

Physical/Mental Qualifications

  • Ability to manage multiple compliance timelines and documentation systems simultaneously
  • Ability to coordinate and lead meetings and manage student support documentation processes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and families regarding support processes
  • Ability to interpret evaluation data and support documentation in a bilingual instructional environment

Job Duties

Essential functions: The Student Support Coordinator is responsible for the following with or without reasonable accommodations.

General Systems Coordination

    • Abide by all NMIS policies procedures Employee Handbook provisions and applicable NMSA and NMAC regulations.
    • Maintain strict confidentiality of student and staff information.
    • Communicate professionally and collaboratively with staff students and families.
    • Maintain organized documentation systems supporting student support services and compliance processes.
    • Carry out duties under the direction of the Student Support Director.
    • Special Education and Section 504 Coordination
      • Coordinate evaluation eligibility determination and service planning processes for students referred for Special Education services.
      • Coordinate Section 504 plan development documentation and monitoring processes.
      • Maintain timelines and documentation required for Special Education and Section 504 compliance.
      • Schedule coordinate and lead meetings including evaluation planning meetings eligibility meetings IEP meetings and 504 meetings.
      • Monitor the implementation of IEP services and Section 504 accommodations and communicate with teachers and administrators to address implementation concerns.
      • Maintain documentation demonstrating that required services accommodations and timelines are implemented in accordance with federal and state requirements.

      Student Assistance Team Coordination

        • Coordinate the operation of the Student Assistance Team (SAT) process.
        • Schedule coordinate and lead SAT meetings and maintain documentation of interventions and recommendation.
        • Ensure that referrals intervention documentation and progress monitoring data are maintained appropriately.
        • Communicate with teachers and administrators regarding SAT processes and follow-up actions.

        Gifted Program Coordination

          • Coordinate and conduct screening evaluation and eligibility processes for the schools gifted program.
          • Maintain documentation related to gifted identification and service plans.
          • Coordinate meetings and documentation associated with gifted Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) where applicable under state regulations.
          • Ensure that gifted documentation processes meet applicable regulatory requirements.

          Communication and Coordination with Staff and Families

            • Serve as a point of contact for questions regarding student support processes and timelines.
            • Communicate with families regarding evaluation processes documentation requirements and meeting scheduling.
            • Coordinate communication between teachers administrators and support staff regarding student support plans.
            • Communicate with school principals regarding implementation of accommodations services and intervention plans and elevate concerns about implementation to the Student Support Director when necessary.

            Additional functions: The Student Support Coordinator is expected to do the following additional functions to adequately complete the duties of the position.

            • Provide input on school policy drafts and revisions as requested by the Head of School or Student Support Director.
            • Participate in professional development and leadership meetings as directed.
            • Assist with preparation for compliance monitoring audits or reporting requirements.
            • Provide de-escalation restraint or seclusion interventions to students as needed in accordance with school policy.
            • Provide safe and effective supervision of students before during and after school in a variety of settings both indoors and outdoors.
            • Perform other reasonable duties as assigned by the Student Support Director or Head of School.
