The Agency of Transportation has an exciting opportunity in the field of construction oversight in the Northeast Construction Region and is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated candidate for a Field Civil Engineer position. This is a standard 40-hour-a-week position but may require working contractor hours which may include some nights and weekends with overtime available. This is an engineering position within the Construction Section where we provide inspection and oversight services on heavy highway construction projects including roadway bridge and railroad with the occasional rock blasting rail trail or even a covered bridge project.
The selected candidate for this position will be assigned to a construction project to learn about some of the following during the construction season:
- Acting as an inspector by observing verifying measuring documenting the work performed by Contractors and making payments for acceptable work.
- Interpreting the plans and specifications that relate to the project.
- Construction materials sampling and testing.
- Reviewing and checking project records and documentation.
- Setting up and operating survey equipment tabulating data and performing calculations in the field.
The career path for this position is linear with the first step becoming a proficient inspector. Then an office engineer and chief inspector and subsequently followed by becoming a Resident Engineer who oversees and manages the Contract daily to ensure compliance with construction processes and materials to be incorporated into the project. If gaining design experience is a must The Agency of Transportation does offer rotational positions that allow for construction during the construction season and the ability to gain design experience in the construction off-season.
Construction Inspectors and Resident Engineers are exposed to a wide variety of construction projects ranging from paving roadway and bridge construction to railroad work rock slope stabilization and even the occasional covered bridge restoration. While gaining valuable experience actively inspecting and documenting all aspects of transportation projects you will have an opportunity to collaborate with designers contractors state and local officials and subject matter experts from all disciplines of engineering and construction. You will assist in the inspection of a specific project or multiple projects under the direction of a Chief Inspector or Resident Engineer. Or based on experience you may be assigned the Chief Inspector for the project(s). Day-to-day you will be tasked with working with project design documents and specifications alongside your inspection team and contractors to ensure the quality construction of transportation infrastructure in Vermont. The work can be challenging and yet very rewarding with abundant opportunities including the potential for design experience as you advance your career and grow professionally. Successful candidates will have an opportunity to work on a variety of tasks of differing complexities both independently and in team environments. The official workstation is Construction Headquarters in Berlin but you will report directly to projects when they are active. This position is regional so even though the official workstation is Berlin there are opportunities to report elsewhere in the off-season with your teammates. These include but are not limited to the regional offices in Colchester Mendon White River Junction and St. Johnsbury. There is potential for telework in the off-season as well.
Environmental Factors
Duties are generally performed in both office and field settings for which private means of transportation must be available. Fieldwork may involve exposure to hazardous materials traffic hazards and construction sites during all weather conditions and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours including attendance at public meetings may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelors degree in civil engineering construction management architectural engineering or related technical field.
OR
Associates degree in civil engineering construction management architectural engineering or related technical field AND two (2) years of experience in engineering OR licensure as an Engineer Intern.
OR
College senior in the final year of a bachelors degree program in civil engineering construction management architectural engineering or related technical field.
Special Requirements
Candidate in final year of bachelors degree must successfully graduate prior to start date.
