Job Duties:

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • May supervise the day-to-day activities of a research unit as needed
  • Identifies research problems and develops complex research methodologies and procedures
  • Serves as a unit subject matter expert and liaison to internal and external stakeholders providing advanced level information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Collects and analyzes complex research data conducts experiments and interviews and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision
  • Monitors program budget and approves unit expenditures
  • Conducts literature reviews prepares reports and materials and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in power electronics and controls

  • Experience in performing multi-physics research including overlapping technologies and energy and thermal management

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A verifiable record of scientific publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at leading technical conferences in the areas of power and energy conversion power delivery systems ship electrification and renewable energy systems

  • Demonstrated experience in the use of MATLAB Python Power Electronic simulation platforms Hardware-in-the-Loop systems and Finite Element Analysis

  • Experience in leading research teams in the university environment

PhD in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in power electronics and controls

The Energy Systems Research Scientist will be a member of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee Center for Sustainable Electrical Energy Systems UWM-SEES team which performs research on government and industry funded grants and supports a university engineering research laboratory focused on grid-connected power electronic systems microgrids and transportation system electrification.

The Research Scientist will propose and lead cutting edge research projects that bridge the gap between basic research and installations responsible for converting and supplying power and energy to critical systems. Additional responsibilities include the support of a range of laboratory growth initiatives and government funded research grants that connect original equipment manufacturers and system integrators within the power and energy sector to the specialized training of power electronics engineers.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work with a team of university engineering faculty to conduct report and publish scientific/engineering research projects related to the development of efficient reliable and resilient power electronics-based power distribution systems through the application of digital engineering processes connecting emerging technologies to current and future applications

  • Assist in supervision of teams of undergraduate and graduate student researchers on research projects including assigning tasks providing technical assistance and following up on task completion and reporting.

  • Develop concepts for new areas of power electronic conversion high voltage engineering electrothermal-physical modeling data generation through evolutionary optimization and Al/ML based solutions suitable for obtaining funding through successful research proposals as a key contributor on the proposed work.

  • Interact productively with the UWM-SEES team and with university faculty and with current and future industrial partners having the goal of performing early-stage research to de-risk and enable commercialization and deployment of power/energy technology systems and products.
