Grounds Manager
Reports To: Director of Facilities Operations
Work Schedule: 7:30a-4:00p occasional evening or weekend work may be required
FLSA status: Exempt full-time benefits eligible
Position Summary
The Grounds Manager position requires an individual who has previous supervisory experience in the grounds/landscaping field. The position requires a person who is professional and demonstrates efficient work habits. The person must be able to lead coach train and work beside a team of groundskeepers creatively solve problems follow verbal and written directions relate well to children and adults and demonstrate a positive attitude toward work the School and other employees. Heathwoods campus covers 122 acres and includes athletic fields a golf practice facility and areas around multiple buildings and sidewalks.
The person in this position manages the grounds team and grounds-related functions of the school is the liaison to outside vendors (athletic field maintenance pest control etc.) and performs other duties as may be assigned. The Grounds Manager also looks for ways to beautify and improve the schools campus. Time will be spent on both office work/administrative tasks and working outside on the campus with the grounds team.
Essential Functions
- Plan for and execute the maintenance and improvement of the outdoor areas of the schools campus. This includes mowing edging trimming planting weeding seeding managing irrigation systems repairing fences and applying fertilizers and pesticides.
- Hire train and manage the grounds team to include spending significant time working outdoors on grounds projects with them. Follow and train groundskeeping/landscaping safety standards and best practices.
- Be the liaison between outside grounds vendors and the School.
- Ensure that the outdoor areas of the campus are safe and attractive. Utilize frequent check-ins inspections and tasks lists to work with the grounds team. Stay in touch with administrators and key employees about the areas around their buildings and the campus in general.
- Order and maintain appropriate grounds/landscaping equipment and supplies.
- Plan projects for the slow growth season and assist other Facilities teams during wet weather.
- Review the schools events calendar to proactively plan for adjusting Grounds Crew tasks or having the team assist with parking traffic control etc. for large events. Schedule additional coverage for evenings and/or weekends as needed.
- Report any non-grounds campus needs including safety and maintenance issues to the Facilities Office.
- Other duties as assigned.
Specific Job Skills
The ideal candidate will:
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the grounds team other employees vendors and students.
- Have an eye for detail and will think strategically about ways to better maintain improve and beautify the campus.
- Model professional standards and behavior at all times.
- Possess physical strength dexterity and coordination to complete grounds tasks and operate equipment.
- Have good communications skills and be able to train others on equipment and grounds/landscaping practices.
- Be proficient in email word processing and spreadsheet software.
- Have knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Be able to distinguish between different chemical materials with the ability to read and understand label information.
Education and Experience
- Completed High School Diploma or equivalent required 2-year degree preferred
- Three years successful grounds/landscaping leadership experience
Working Conditions
- Work will be performed throughout grounds on a 122-acre campus. Walking strenuous work and exposure to the elements will occur daily.
- Work may involve heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds) reaching pushing pulling carrying stooping kneeling ladder climbing maneuvering in confined spaces and prolonged standing and walking; work may involve exposure to extreme temperatures wet conditions chemicals and smells commonly associated with schools in general.
