Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position will report to the Correctional Food Service Manager. This is a supervisory position. This position provides daily supervision to Correctional Food Service Officers and offenders on the assigned shift rotation. Job Duties include:

• Communicate with Managers and employees both verbally and in writing.

• Comprehend and abide by verbal and written instructions.

• Work a varied schedule and be able to return to work during emergencies.

• Continuously observe and patrol the work areas in Food Service.

• Perform crisis intervention counseling.

• Compose and write comprehensive reports.

• Perform rescue functions such as CPR First Adi Fire Fighting.

• Be able to engage in physical activities necessary to control or apprehend offenders.

• Be able to defend oneself or others against physical attacks to effectively subdue and restrain violent offenders.

• Distinguish color codes used for emergencies and security purposes.

• Operating locking devices and maintaining keys.

• Be able to tolerate verbal and mental abuse from offenders.

• Input and comprehend data.

• Conduct offender counts.

• Securing and maintaining equipment.

• Read comprehend and calculate menus rotate stock adhere to and observe sanitary food handling practices.

• Complete CPR Firearms and unarmed self-defense training.

• Instruct and supervise subordinate staff.

• Must be able to requisition food and supplies within an allotted budget.

• Identify and coordinate training.

• Make emergency decisions concerning Food Service operations.

• Plan and develop operating procedures and conduct employee work appraisals.

• Work shift assignments based on the needs of the institution.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) withState Benefits.

The salary grade for this position isNC10 Salary Range: $43267 - $75718. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.

About Granville Correctional Institution:

Granville Correctional Institution houses offenders in both single cells and dormitories. When the facility opened in 1997 its main mission was to process newly admitted youthful offenders between the ages of 19 and 21. The prison also houses offenders that participate in job assignments and other programs. It is a close-custody prison but it is also approved to house offenders assigned to maximum control intensive control disciplinary segregation and safekeeping status.

The prisons high-security maximum control unit (HCON) opened in October 1998. This high-security concept in correctional design is intended for the states most violent and assaultive offenders. The Supermax (HCON) unit in Butner was the first of its kind in North Carolina.

Due to the demand of prison space in 2003 the facilitys age criteria for offenders changed from 18-21 to 19-25. In October 2005 the facility changed its name from Polk Youth Institution to Polk Correctional Institution to reflect this older population including the HCON unit.

Polk Correctional Institution officially opened November 15 1997 when offenders were transferred to the new facility. The new prison in Butner replaced an old unit on Blue Ridge Road in Raleigh. The original Polk facility acquired its name in 1920 from Col. William Polk a decorated officer in the Revolutionary War. It was built on the grounds of Camp Polk a U.S. Army tank base during World War I. Initially inmates farmed the site. On Oct. 4 2021 the facilitys name was changed to Granville Correctional Institution.

Management Preferences:

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

• Documented experience in sanitation preparing menus managing inventory and/or other large-scale food service production activities.

• Documented supervision of employees and/or offender workers.
