RESPONSIBILITIES

The Department of Writing is looking for interested students to work in the Writing Center.

  • Tutoring a wide range of students including international and graduate students from across the college approximately 10 hours a week to help them gain independence as writers
  • Maintaining the Writing Center as a welcoming and inclusive space for all
  • Hosting workshops and visits from classesto promote use of the Writing Center Develop instructional content
  • Complete projects and appointments on their own with relative independence or in groups
  • Potentially serves as a peer coach for new student employees (tutors) providing support answering general questions and positively promoting the workplace.
  • Perform work that supports and/or defines processes within Writing Center pedagogical practice eg: working alongside full time Writing Center Director and taking ownership of day-to-day responsibilities or long-term strategic projects
  • Work with a high degree of confidentiality for area procedures
  • Potential for leadership positions such as Admin Tutor (some tutors manage other tutors)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Solid academic standing and strong writing abilities particularly in expository genres
  • Successful completion of either Academic Writing I;Argument; Inquiry Research and Writing Across the Disciplines;Introduction to the Essay;or Ithaca Seminar in Writing
  • Completion of at least one additional writing course if not more beyond the 100-level; Argument stronglypreferred
  • Outside research/internship experience in the work environment and/or possessing the knowledge necessary to offer writing tutoring with relative independence accuracy and agency is highly desirable
  • Sophomore standing at time of first week working
  • Commitment to helping others become more effective writers
  • Excellentcommunication skills:
    • Experience with public speaking and is comfortable presenting to groups on area processes.
    • Personal qualities conducive to one-on-one conferences such as a friendly approachable manner; patience
    • Good listening abilities with a sense of maturity and responsibility
  • Rising sophomores to seniors; we cannot hire current seniors or graduates.
  • Experience/interest in writing copy or instructional material web design online content development PR and/or graphic design is highly desirable

NOTE: If hired you will be REQUIRED to take WRTG 21800: Writing Center Pedagogy for 1-credit in the Fall 2025 semester Pass/Fail. The course meets during Block I.

That means the course ends in October and if successfully completed you will begin tutoring in the Writing Center. You can still register for the course if you arent hired. Then if you try again next year and get hired you can begin tutoring immediately in Fall 2025.

PLEASE RECONSIDER YOUR APPLICATION IF YOU CANNOT REGISTER FOR WRTG 218 FALL 2025 FOR ANY REASON. Reasons may include but are not limited to conflicts with other classes overload credits that are not permitted or work conflicts. Please consult with your advisor to ensure you can take the course. It is recommended that you register for WRTG 218 even if you havent completed the interview process; the course can be dropped later if desired.

Pay Rate: $16.30/hr
