Job Summary

Reporting to the Trades Manager the Electrician A will perform advanced journey-level electrical work to maintain repair and install electrical systems across campus facilities ensuring safe and reliable operation of institutional infrastructure. Coordinates the daily work of electricians and assigned staff providing technical guidance training and oversight to ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes and safety standards. Plans and executes electrical components of maintenance and renovation projects including estimating materials reviewing plans and coordinating with other trades contractors and facilities staff. Performs preventive maintenance troubleshoots complex electrical issues and assists with elevator shutdowns and start-ups with basic knowledge of ADA lifts and other conveyances. Maintains accurate work records in the maintenance management system supports campus energy reliability and responds to electrical emergencies and power disruptions to ensure continuous operations.

Job Duties

  • 40% - Electrical Maintenance & Repair - Performs journey-level electrical work to maintain campus infrastructure and ensure reliable power distribution. Troubleshoots electrical failures and repairs lighting systems panels circuits equipment and building systems including lighting controls emergency lighting and outlets. Maintains transformers and switchgear oversees and verifies the quality of work performed by third-party vendors and responds to electrical service calls. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Preventive Maintenance & System Inspections - Maintains the reliability and safety of campus electrical systems through scheduled inspections and preventive maintenance. Performs maintenance on panels generators ATS systems and lighting; inspects wiring and equipment; and tests emergency power systems. Maintains familiarity with the electrical operation of elevators and other conveyances documents work in the CMMS and identifies potential failures and safety risks. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Crew Leadership & Work Coordination - Leads and coordinates the work of electricians and other trades assigned to electrical projects. Organizes daily work orders provides technical direction and training to junior staff enforces safety procedures verifies work quality and coordinates with other trades including HVAC plumbing and carpentry. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Safety Compliance & Adherence Code - Ensures all electrical work complies with regulatory and institutional safety standards including the National Electrical Code (NEC) and Cal-OSHA requirements. Maintains lockout/tagout procedures conducts safety inspections and supports campus environmental health and safety programs. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Work Order Management & Documentation - Maintains accurate records and coordinates work requests within the campus maintenance system. Updates CMMS work orders documents repairs and inspections maintains equipment history tracks material usage and prepares reports for facilities management. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Emergency Response Support - Provides rapid response to electrical emergencies affecting campus operations. Restores power during outages addresses fire alarm and other life-safety electrical issues supports emergency generators and assists during campus incidents or severe weather. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED. Certificate(s) of technical training including completion of a recognized electrician apprenticeship program.
  • Five years of progressively responsible journey-level (journeyman) electrical experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory wiring methods and the installation maintenance and repair of commercial and institutional electrical systems including distribution panels lighting systems transformers and emergency power equipment.
  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) California Electrical Code and Cal-OSHA safety standards including lockout/tagout procedures and safe work practices around energized systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose complex electrical problems and implement effective repairs using appropriate testing equipment meters and specialized trade tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints wiring diagrams specifications and technical manuals to support maintenance repair and construction projects.
  • Skill in planning and organizing electrical work estimating labor and materials and coordinating tasks with other trades contractors and facilities staff.
  • Ability to lead assign and review the work of electricians and other maintenance personnel while providing technical guidance and training.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and other software tools to track work orders document maintenance activities and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly and work effectively with colleagues contractors and campus stakeholders in a service-oriented environment.
  • Ability to respond quickly and effectively to electrical outages safety concerns and other urgent infrastructure issues affecting campus operations.
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding work including lifting equipment climbing ladders working at heights and working in confined or mechanical spaces.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and training and to work effectively and professionally across functions disciplines levels and with diverse groups.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree or technical certificate in electrical technology or related field.
  • California General Electrician Certification or equivalent or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • One year of experience in a lead role with knowledge of high voltage systems.
  • Experience in sustainability including renewable energy integration energy efficiency and working with advanced smart systems or low-carbon technologies.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:The starting base hourly rate for this position is $35.45/hr. After 6 months the base hourly rate increases to $36.04/hr and after 12 months the base hourly rate increases to $36.42/hr.
