Purpose of the Role

The Clinical Placement Co-ordinator (CPC) post is to plan organise support evaluate & record the undergraduate student nurses supernumerary and internship clinical placements as part of their respective undergraduate BSc Nursing Programme.

The CPC must ensure that the approved clinical learning environments meet and monitor the NMBIs regulatory requirements and standards of the BSc Nursing programme(s).

He/ she is responsible for the allocation of clinical placement for all pre-registration Student Nurses ensuring each students meets the requirements and standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.

Responsibility to liaise with the appropriate staff within Bon Secours Temple Street Childrens University Hospital other hospitals as appropriate and the third level institutions i.e. Dublin City University in relation to the allocation of Student Nurses to clinical placements.

Objectives of the Post

  • As per NMBI requirements CPC co-ordinates student nurses clinical learning placements throughout the duration of their respective BSc Nursing programme(s) (NMBI ratio 1:30).
  • Acts as a link between the student nurse preceptor/associate preceptor clinical nurse manager third level lecturers and the CNE /Nursing Department.
  • Guides registered nurses in their role as the students preceptor during their clinical placements.
  • Guides preceptors in the process of clinical competency assessment ensuring assessments are carried out with due regard for fairness accuracy objectivity & timeframes.
  • Promote the students application of theoretical knowledge to clinical nursing practice and facilitates the application of evidence based nursing practice.
  • Record students timesheets and all DOCATS in line with GDPR.
  • Liaise closely with the Allocations Officer in the linked Higher Education Institute (Dublin City University) Temple Street Childrens University Hospital and other Higher Education Institutes as required.
  • Participate in audits and/or service improvement and other quality patient safety initiatives to include National Acute Care Metrics.
  • Participate in nurse practice initiatives to support the application of theory to clinical practice and improved quality of patient care.
  • The post holder is expected to work with other professionals involved in all aspects of Nursing including multidisciplinary professional education.

Professional Standard

  • To practice within and support the Bon Secours Mission and Values policies procedures guidelines and new initiative as directed / introduced by the hospital.
  • To liaise with CNM/designate to ensure that BSc nursing students work with their allocated preceptor/associated preceptor daily.
  • To provide clinical teaching to the students in the clinical area
  • To provide guidance to clinical staff on any issues relating to the BSc nursing programme.
  • To support preceptors/associate preceptors in their teaching role and in ensuring that BSc nursing students learning outcomes and required competencies are achieved.
  • To facilitate BSc nursing students and clinical staff in the correct use of the assessment documents e.g. (Clinical Learning Outcomes & Competency Booklet).
  • To liaise with both BSc nursing students and preceptors with regard to the students performance and progress.
  • To identify with the preceptor and to assist the Link Lecture in implementing a learning action plan and or disciplinary code where required.
  • To ensure that BSc nursing students meet the requirements of the practice placement guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Co-ordinate plan organise support evaluate and record the undergraduate student nurses supernumerary and internship clinical placements as part of their undergraduate BSc Nursing Programme.
  • In partnership with the CNMs ensure that each student is assigned a named preceptor/associate preceptor who is a registered nurse for the duration of the clinical practice placements.
  • Support clinical staff staff nurses /preceptors in developing their clinical preceptor role.
  • Provide clinical workshops on the clinical assessment competency documentation.
  • Plan & lead out on the one day preceptorship course as required.
  • Be available to discuss students overall performance with their preceptor and Clinical Nurse Manager.
  • Maintain links with the students university personnel/tutors CNE staff clinical personnel and assist in developing students action learning plans as required.
  • Attend & participate at the various nursing forum in our partner university DCU. (PAG PABS CLEG SALO SSNDP)
  • Maintain accurate records of students clinical time sheets attendance clinical assessments reflection and pay backs.
  • Ensure that students adhere to the relevant Hospital policies and procedures i.e. absenteeism nursing (uniform) relevant human resource policies and other hospital polices including social media.
  • Ensure nursing students meet the requirements of clinical placement guidelines patient confidentiality and professional behaviour.
  • Monitor structured & unstructured reflective practice for student nurses. Support students completion of their portfolio assisting them to link practice to the Domains of Competence.
  • Encourage and support students disclosure of a disability in order to enhance their clinical learning opportunities.
  • Deal with complaints in a timely and professional manner.
  • Organise and participate in the Evidence Based Practice days for the 4th years as appropriate.
  • Participate in Evaluations & Auditing for quality improvement purposes.
  • Promote encourage and participate in Nursing developments research and quality improvement initiatives in the Hospital.
  • While the post centres on guiding monitoring supporting and evaluating undergraduate student nurses clinical education the post holder is expected to be aware of and work with other nursing colleagues involved in the whole continuum of nurse education. These areas include: undergraduate and postgraduate programmes continuing professional education specialist education and nurse adaptation programmes.
  • Support registered nurses and students in the use of the hospital policy procedures protocols and guidelines available through Q Pulse system Royal Marsden manual of clinical procedures or Hospital intranet.

Clinical Practice

  • To facilitate BSc nursing students & clinical staff to identity and optimise available learning opportunities and aid the positive clinical learning environment that enhances clinical competence and knowledge.
  • To assist BSc nursing students & clinical staff to apply nursing theory to nursing practice within the clinical area
  • To encourage BSc nursing students & clinical staff to engage in reflective practice problem solving and critical analysis.
  • To build BSc nursing students confidence during their clinical placements by giving support encouragement and feedback.
  • To observe and report to Nurse Practice Development any practices or procedures in the clinical area which could create a poor learning environment.
  • To actively work towards improving individual and hospital processes and practices to benefit patient care.
  • To work as part of the interdisciplinary team identifying areas for quality improvement with regard to gaining HIQA/JCI accreditation.
  • To promote high quality patient care through promotion development and implementation of evidence-based nursing practice.
  • To communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • To participate as required on committees within the hospital and DCU with regard to students and clinical issues.
  • To approach interpersonal relationships in a manner that promotes a healthy working environment and avoids conflict.

Education and Self Development

  • To provide a preceptorship education programme for staff.
  • To participate as required in training programmes and to attend relevant lecture seminars or courses related to nursing issues as required.
  • Maintain his/her competencies as a clinician supervisor and educator.
