Job Summary

Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Principal and Supervisor of Gifted / Talented and Advanced Programs

General Responsibilities: Structure lead and instruct students in Gifted and Talented and advanced programming Integrated Humanities (IH) Integrated Math and Science (IMS) and Early Identification Program (EIP).

Essential Duties:

  • Works with general education teachers through collaborative processes to differentiate instruction in the general classroom setting.
  • Provides periodic feedback and assessment information to classroom teachers through the use of the GT Student Learning Profile and other documents as required.
  • Develops collegial relationships with general education teachers.
  • Provides demonstrations/modeling of lessons co-teaches lessons provide professional development experiences and coaches general education teachers to ensure improvement of instructional practice.
  • Develops activities to encourage parental and community involvement in the education of the gifted
  • Defines develops implements instructs and evaluates a series of seminars on topics of relevance to students at Metz Middle School.
  • Defines develops implements instructs and evaluates a research elective course of relevance to students at Metz Middle School.
  • Manages recruitment cycles for Gifted and Talented and advanced programming at Metz Middle School.
  • Utilizes class space to form an environment conducive to learning where gifted students social and emotional needs may be addressed collectively or individually as needed.
  • Provides effective supervision of volunteers and paraprofessionals when applicable.

    Gifted and Talented Teacher (Middle School)
  • Works effectively with peer leaders supervisors and administrators.
  • Utilizes effective classroom management skills.
  • Attends all meetings called or approved by the Superintendent or Principal.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Building Principal.

Requisite Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrates effective knowledge of and sensitivity for the needs of a diverse student population..
  • Knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues and research related to gifted education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the characteristics of gifted students; consistent with the middle school philosophy.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the gifted behaviors of special populations of students (i.e. culturally diverse low income physically disabled).
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational models teaching methods and strategies that ensure gifted students are engaged in rigorous academic learning experiences.
  • Knowledge and understanding of strategies that support the integration of gifted education into the general education setting.

Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement to teach middle school grades 7 8; an endorsement in History and Social Sciences or English.
  • Must possess an endorsement in gifted education or the ability to obtain the endorsement for Gifted Education within two (2) years of employment.
  • Experience in working with diagnostic and prescriptive approaches to assessment of gifted students.
  • Experience in instructional technology as well as willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see read talk hear handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as but not limited to: a personal computer calculator copier and fax machine. Some climbing stooping kneeling crouching reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting grasping and repetitive motions. Some heavy work requiring the exertion of 10 pounds of force occasionally to move objects may be required.
