Position Summary
The Special Education Transition Specialist supports middle and high school students with disabilities by coordinating transition planning and services that prepare students for postsecondary education competitive integrated employment and independent living. This position ensures compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) transition requirements while collaborating with students families school staff and community partners.
Qualifications
- Valid Virginia Special Education license (General Curriculum and/or Adapted Curriculum)
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with students with disabilities
- Knowledge of IDEA the IEP process and Virginia secondary transition requirements
- Experience with transition planning or work-based learning preferred
- Middle or high school experience preferred
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinate transition planning for students beginning no later than age 14
- Collaborate with IEP teams to develop measurable transition goals
- Participate in IEP and eligibility meetings; serve as LEA representative as assigned
- Coordinate work-based learning and career exploration opportunities
- Partner with DARS community agencies employers and postsecondary institutions
- Conduct transition assessments and support postsecondary planning
- Maintain accurate documentation for compliance and reporting
- Serve in assigned foster care and homeless liaison roles
- Perform other duties as assigned

Adherence to WCPS policies. Reliable attendance and ability to perform essential physical functions.
Terms of Employment:
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience
Contract: 12 month (260 day) contract effective August 1 2026
