Summary:
Join the Centers 2026 Summer Internship Program on the Boreal-Biosequester project as a Research Assistant Intern to help transform raw data into actionable insights for a sustainable future. The Soil Carbon Lab operates at the cutting edge of soil research and machine learning to improve how we measure map and model dynamic agricultural systems. This opportunity provides on-site mentoring training and group support.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Field sampling at the Howland Research forest in Maine and data analysis for methane fluxes from trees at the Howland Research Forest
Work on a novel project looking at the potential for the microbes that reside on/in trees to remove atmospheric methane as part of the new project- Boreal-Biosequester
Measure methane fluxes from tree stems and foliage to ascertain if trees are taking up or emitting methane
Must have the following Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Greenhouse gas (CO2 CH4) fluxes from terrestrial environments
Course work in ecology chemistry and statistics preferred
Ability to travel to Maine
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled (or will graduate in Spring 2026) in an undergraduate or graduate program in Ecology Chemistry Biology Statics or a related field
Physical Requirements:
In the field the physical requirements of this role include:
Air train vehicle travel to access field locations
Driving a vehicle or ATV to access field locations
Walking hiking climbing to access field locations
Paddling canoeing to access field locations
Standing and sitting for sustained periods
Frequent bending squatting and kneeling
Reaching overhead
Climbing ladders
Use of manual and power tools including shovels saws drills and hammers
Ability to lift up to 25 )lbs up to 10 times/day
Ability to carry up to 25lbs up to 10 times/day
Ability to push/pull up to 25lbs up to 10 times/day
Work Environment:
The functions of this role are conducted indoors and in lab environments.

Hours of Work
This role is paid on an hourly basis. Typically full-time employees work 40 hours during a Monday through Friday workweek.
