Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Director of Legislative Oversight the Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System implements the Office of Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System Act by conducting investigations audits inspections and other reviews of the Nebraska correctional system. The Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System is appointed by the Director of Legislative Oversight with approval from the Chairperson of the Legislative Oversight Committee the Chairperson of the Executive Board and the Chairperson of the Judiciary Committee of the Legislature. The Inspector General serves a term of five years and may be reappointed to successive terms.
Salary: $52.323/hour ($108832/annual) up to $58.857/hour ($122423 annual)
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages directs and supervises activities of the Office of Inspector General of the Nebraska Correctional System.
- Receives notices and investigates deaths and serious injuries of those living and working in the Nebraska Correctional System.
- Receives and investigates complaints and allegations involving the Nebraska Correctional System including cases involving allegations of possible misconduct misfeasance or violation of statutes rules or regulations.
- Plans conducts and coordinates audits investigations and other reviews. Writes reviews and edits related reports.
- Analyzes operational issues of the Nebraska Correctional System to make recommendations for improvement.
- Monitors data and key performance indicators.
- Reports findings and conclusions to the Legislatures Legislative Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee.
- Supervises and directs the work of staff.
- Monitors and testifies when necessary on legislation related to inspector general duties and changes to the Nebraskas Correctional System.
- Represents the office on various committees and commissions related to Nebraskas Correctional System such as the Nebraska Continuity Advisory Board.
- Represents the office upon inquiries from the media.
- Performs public speaking at community or other events and meetings pertaining to the work of the office.
- Obtains and retains certification as an Inspector General by the Association of Inspectors General
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Law degree
- Six years of administrative or research experience in state government or a related field including at least two years of supervisory experience. A relevant graduate degree or legal education may partially substitute for experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Government oversight experience.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of remaining in a stationary position and working on a computer.
- Ability to conduct extended visits to state facilities and related sites.

Knowledge Skills Ability (KSA):
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of the structure and operation of local state and federal government and the role and content of state statutory and regulatory provisions.
- Knowledge of the structure and operation of state government the Legislature and the legislative process.
- Knowledge of the structure and operation of the Nebraska Correctional System.
- Knowledge or understanding the role standards and parameters of legislative oversight and government accountability work.
Skills:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate with senators legislative staff stakeholders and the public.
Ability:
- Ability to work independently organize and manage work and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
- Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule including working nights and weekends.
