The Nuclear Waste Management Specialist reporting to the R&D Director is primarily responsible for leading Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) radioactive waste management program. This role focuses on establishing safe compliant and cost-effective approaches for handling processing storing and disposing of waste materials resulting from molten salt reactor operations.
Other Responsibilities Include:
- Lead development and implementation of nuclear waste management strategies specific to molten salt reactor byproducts including salt waste streams and activated materials
- Evaluate and select optimal nuclear waste encapsulation technologies and materials for long-term stability
- Establish vendor relationships with nuclear waste form suppliers and encapsulation technology providers
- Design nuclear waste treatment protocols that meet regulatory requirements while minimizing volume and cost
- Plan and establish the characterization of nuclear waste streams to determine appropriate handling and disposal pathways
- Ensure all nuclear waste management activities comply with NRC regulations (10 CFR Part 20 10 CFR Part 61) and DOE orders
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies on nuclear waste classification storage authorization disposal authorization and compliance reporting
- Conduct life-cycle cost analyses for different nuclear waste management approaches
- Lead research initiatives to develop innovative waste treatment methods specific to molten salt systems
- Provide technical guidance on decontamination and decommissioning planning
- Present test results assumptions risks and constraints to the R&D Director and propose paths forward
- Collaborating with the TEI Engineering to support design development
Core Competencies
- Deep understanding of radioactive waste classification systems (Class A B C GTCC)
- Knowledge of waste encapsulation matrices including cement glass ceramics and metal alloys
- Familiarity with molten salt chemistry and fluoride salt waste characteristics is highly desirable
- Understanding of radionuclide behavior decay chains and long-term waste form performance
- Critical thinking and decision-making
- Results-oriented with strong execution focus
- Team collaboration across multidisciplinary groups
- Adaptability and flexibility in dynamic R&D environments
- Clear and effective communication at all organizational levels

Requirements
- Bachelors degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering Nuclear Engineering Chemical Engineering Materials Science Health Physics or related technical field required
- Minimum 5 years of experience in nuclear waste management
- Thorough knowledge of NRC nuclear waste management regulations and licensing requirements
- Experience with nuclear waste characterization manifest preparation and transportation requirements (DOT regulations)
- Experience with DOE nuclear waste management programs or national laboratory collaborations
- Understanding of ALARA principles and radiation protection standards
- Track record of successful project management in nuclear or hazardous waste environments
- Strong analytical skills for evaluating competing waste management technologies
- Clear technical writing skills for regulatory submissions and procedures
- Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
- Problem-solving mindset with focus on practical cost-effective solutions
Assets
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or Certified Health Physicist (CHP) certification
- Experience with advanced reactor technologies or non-light water reactor systems
- Background in radiochemistry or materials science
- Knowledge of international waste management regulations practices and standards (e.g. IAEA UK Canada France)
- Demonstrated experience working with nuclear waste disposal facilities and third-party vendors
