Our Service:

headspace Centresact as a one-stop-shop for young people who need help with mental health physical health alcohol and other drugs and/orwork and study support.

On Offer:

  • Based in Geelong VIC
  • Permanent part-time (0.6 FTE) opportunity available (must work Mondays however the other 2 days of the week can be negotiated)

Role overview:

The purpose of this role is to provide AOD counselling education and support to young people presenting with substance use and mental health concerns. This may involve brief interventions counselling initiating and managing planned treatment options consultation and referral to other agencies or crisis management.

Key objectives of this role include:

  • To engage assess and provide counselling education and support to young people and their families and carers.
  • To make supported referrals to required services including General Practitioners generalist welfare and AOD treatment services to meet young peoples holistic needs.
  • To effectively engage with young people to assist in reducing the impacts of harmful substance use.
  • To encourage healthy alternate choices and develop coping strategies to respond to emotional needs and life events.
  • To work in alignment with best practice guidelines and Youth AOD frameworks that recognize everyones unique context including environment relationships culture values and beliefs

Requirements:

  • Must have one of the following: General AHPRA registration as a Psychologist Mental Health Occupational Therapist Mental Health Nurse OR Social Worker with AASW registration
  • Understanding of the concept of Harm Minimisation and Recovery Oriented Practice
  • Demonstrated experience in providing youth focused AOD counselling support and outreach.
  • Completion or willingness to complete the core AOD modules.
  • Knowledge and experience of frameworks for working with young people with substance use issues.
  • Education training and experience in mental health and adolescent and youth development.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate liaise and network with a range of services and health agencies.
  • Demonstrated experience in working in mental health and/or in depth understanding in mental health issues including best treatment options support services and co-morbidities
  • Demonstrated ability to work holistically with consumers with mental health issues including people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) or First Nations communities
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain linkages and networks with a range of government community and corporate stakeholders to facilitate clear referral pathways
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills including active listening and Motivational Interviewing
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in providing educational sessions to groups: consumers and families external providers and community
  • Must be eligible to apply/currently hold a WWCC
  • Must hold/be willing to apply for NDIS worker screening clearance
