Position Information

Make a Difference Through Recreation and Inclusion

The Department of Parks and Recreation Park Maintenance and Recreation Services Division Special Services Section is seeking aRecreation Specialist Iin Kapolei (serving Waipahu-Ewa-Kapolei communities). This position assists with planning coordinating and supporting city-wide recreation programs with an emphasis on therapeutic recreation and inclusion of people with disabilities and helps provide training and guidance to staff involved in those programs.

What You Will Do

  • Assist with planning organizing and monitoring city-wide recreation programs that promote participation by people with disabilities and support inclusive program access.
  • Consult with Parks and Recreation personnel on accessibility and inclusion practices including observing participant leisure and social skills and recommending appropriate supports.
  • Assist with developing and improving program access procedures resources and initiatives that support therapeutic recreation and inclusive programming.
  • Research develop and assist in conducting staff training related to therapeutic recreation inclusion practices and program accessibility.
  • Coordinate with city staff community organizations and partner agencies to promote recreational opportunities and provide information and referrals to individuals with disabilities.
  • Support department operations by assisting with outreach and promotional materials recruiting and supporting program staff and volunteers coordinating special events preparing reports and documentation and traveling to recreation sites island-wide to conduct training and program activities.


Special Working Conditions

  • Frequent travel throughout Oahu to program sites and community locations.
  • May work evenings weekends and holidays.
  • Will serve as a Disaster Response worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At the time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT
Substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with specialization in recreation physical education group work or a related field.

Substitution: Work experience may be substituted for a bachelors degree on a year-for-year basis. Such experience must have provided the knowledge skills and analytical ability normally gained from the attainment of a bachelors degree.

For example:
1. Four (4) years of professional work experience in any occupation may substitute for a general bachelors degree.
2. Four (4) years of general work experience (does not need to be professional-level experience) in recreationmay substitute for a general bachelors degree.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT
Two (2) years of professional recreation experience one (1) year of which shall have been in planning organizing coordinating and directing therapeutic recreation programs for participants with disabilities.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS NEEDED
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and practices of supervision;
  • Recreational program policies principles tools and techniques;
  • Instructional methods and training techniques; and
  • Community recreational needs group behavior and public relations.
Ability to:
  • Plan direct and coordinate the work of others;
  • Recognize community recreational and leisure needs and problems;
  • Stimulate community interest and support for recreation programs;
  • Train recreation staff and maintain cooperative relationships with staff and the public; and
  • Prepare reports and the community clearly through oral and written instructions.

Substitution: A Masters degree in recreation physical education or education from an accredited four-year college or university may be substituted for one (1) year of the general recreation requirement. There is no substitutionfor the required one (1) year of experience in the specialty area of planning organizing coordinating and directing therapeutic recreation programs for participants with disabilities. Refer to the Education Verification information listed above for the crediting of your education.



LICENSE REQUIREMENT
Prior to appointment:
Possession of an appropriate drivers license.

Prior to completion of probation:
1. American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or equivalent; and
2. American Red Cross or American Heart Association Adult Child and Infant CPR and AED Certificate to include care for choking and obstructed airway or equivalent.
