This role is a hybrid work arrangement. Work schedule to be discussed with the hiring Manager according to the guidelines defined by the department.

Your role

CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Manager to lead the Advertising Standards team in Montreal. This critical role is responsible for overseeing all Advertising Standards activities ensuring commercial scripts produced messages and paid content comply with Corporate standards media industry policies and codes before they are broadcast or placed on Radio-Canada services.

You will collaborate closely with internal CBC/Radio-Canada teams to proactively mitigate potential risks (legal advocacy or standards) that could impact Radio-Canada program integrity.

You will partner with various Media Solutions teams clients and marketing agencies to promote awareness of our advertising standards offering strategic guidance to ensure commercial campaigns and messages are approved.

Key tasks:

  • Team Leadership & Management: Supervise and manage the Advertising Standards team based in Montreal.

  • Standards & Compliance: Manage ad standards activities and review procedures to ensure white glove client service guaranteeing the consistent application of Corporate media industry and CRTC guidelines policies and standards.

Content Review & Approval:

  • Review high-risk commercial messages (sensitive restrictions or those with potential for rejection).

  • Identify potential policy or code violations.

  • Develop and propose solutions to eliminate violations.

  • Negotiate changes determine necessary scheduling or placement restrictions or reject material from being run.

Consultation & Advice:

  • Provide information and guidance as needed to advertisers and agencies advising on campaigns and messages compliant with CBC/Radio-Canadas standards for placement on our stations or platforms.

Issue Resolution:

  • Work with internal CBC/Radio-Canada departments on sensitive media issues. Collaborate with Audience Relations to address public complaints regarding commercial content especially those related to Quebec language laws and advertising standards.

Ad Placement in Programming:

  • Evaluate Radio-Canada programming content and audience demographics to determine appropriate ad or campaign placement. Establish and administer guidelines to restrict the placement of commercial material deemed unsuitable for Radio-Canada programming.

Industry Representation:

  • Respond to questions concerns and complaints from the advertising industry private broadcasters the public the CRTC and internal departments concerning commercial content. Represent Radio-Canada at industry meetings as needed.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education & Experience:

  • Post-secondary education in Business Legal Communications or a related discipline combined with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.

Policy Expertise:

  • Proven experience reviewing and interpreting policies and/or regulations.

Industry Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of advertising industry codes and regulations including the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards ThinkTV guidelines and processes and other advertising and media industry standards.

  • Broad knowledge of the broadcast and advertising industry; in-depth knowledge of functions such as copy management traffic ad operations systems and procedures.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Extensive experience communicating effectively and concisely with all levels.

  • Strong communication presentation (written verbal and interpersonal) listening and interpretive skills.

  • Bilingualism (French and English) is required.

  • Experience managing staff. Experience in a unionized environment is a significant asset.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Ability to manage multiple disparate priorities.

  • Demonstrated initiative creative problem-solving skills and sound judgment in decision-making.

  • Experience implementing process and procedure improvements.

Current Affairs & Politics:

  • Up-to-date knowledge of current affairs together with national provincial and local politics is required. An awareness of advocacy lobbying and political contexts is required.

Elections Advertising:

  • Experience managing elections advertising including communications with political parties prior to election periods.

Flexibility: Flexible working hours may be required on an as-needed basis.
