Job Summary


A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Director Research Security Data and Privacy the Research Security and Compliance Advisor (the Advisor) holds a strategic position within the VP Research Portfolio providing collaborative and proactive support for researchers on activities pertaining to research security and research funding compliance with an objective of strengthening the integrity and stature of research at Queens.

With a strong awareness of research security best practices regulatory guidelines and available resources including open-source intelligence resources the Advisor provides project management services training and targeted guidance and support to faculty members in their consideration and adherence to research security initiatives and funding compliance procedures and policies. For example the Advisor may work one-on-one with faculty members through the relevant workflows to assist in the assessment of research security risks associated with a project including supporting the conduct of due diligence on partners and collaborators. The Advisor may also support faculty members in the completion of required documents such as applicant/awardee/partner disclosures project risk mitigation plans and annual or other reports pertaining to research security and compliance. The Advisor develops processes that enable post-award tracking of ongoing compliance with funding requirements and collaborates with stakeholder departments and research service colleagues including Research Project Advisors and Research Legal Counsel in the interpretation implementation and review of legal research security and compliance requirements. The Advisor also oversees development and implementation of educational initiatives strategies and plans including facilitating training which satisfy university and agency policies as well as Federal provincial and potentially international regulations governing the conduct of research. The Advisor is responsible for maintaining and monitoring audit and regulatory updates and compliance expectations making recommendations to senior management within the Vice-Principal Research portfolio.

This position provides expert advice to members of the university regarding applications for research funding. This position works with new research groups identifies funding opportunities assists with applications and acts as an advocate or liaison with a variety of individuals and institutions to increase participation and success rates for funded projects.

Job Description

What you will do

  • Provides expert advice and resources to faculty members faculty offices and non-academic partners to aid in the submission of successful applications for research funding.
  • Develops and implements strategies to increase participation and success rates for funding competitions.
  • Identifies and monitors funding opportunities appropriate for researchers and research groups.
  • Encourages and facilitates the formation of new research teams or groups around identified funding opportunities.
  • Serves as an advocate on behalf of faculty with agency/institutional staff funding bodies sponsors governments organizations other universities and/or community partners.
  • Liaises with representatives of other institutions and funding agency staff regarding interpretation of guidelines and policies.
  • Plans and organizes a variety of workshops training sessions information events and programs aimed at increasing the success rate of applications and funded projects.
  • Facilitates post-award administration of large-scale projects.
  • Manages the application process ensuring all applications are completed within application deadlines.
  • Prepares and delivers reports individual funding plans and/or data analysis for strategic planning initiatives.
  • Acts as the project manager driving application and contract activity flow.
  • Ensures implementation of process changes to reflect program and policy adjustments.
  • Develops resources including instructional materials.
  • Provides editing feedback regarding quality content and style on grant applications.
  • Prepares and reviews communications including letters of support.
  • Supports Indigenous-related research applications and funding opportunities.
  • Maintains current knowledge of policies procedures and regulatory structures.
  • Ensures compliance with funding policies and processes (internal and external) apprising management of compliance issues and/or risks.
  • Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.
Required Education
  • Masters Degree or equivalent.
  • In addition requires a professional designation certification or other qualification or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.

  • Required Experience
    • More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
    • Experience in planning and/or managing projects considered an asset.
    • Experience in data trend analysis and reporting considered an asset.
    • Experience in program analysis and reporting considered an asset.
    • Experience in writing interviewing reviewing editing and/or proofreading internal and/or external communications and documents considered an asset (e.g. social media policy manuals newsletters handbooks legal documents forms/templates blogs training/reference materials technical documents webinars etc.).
    • Experience monitoring evaluating and testing records processes and/or systems to assess compliance with applicable laws agreements contracts and/or policies considered an asset (e.g. IT systems audits financial audits operational audits etc.).
    • Knowledge of relevant laws regulations policies standards and/or guidelines considered an asset.
    • Previous experience developing and delivering workshops considered an asset.
    • Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.


    • Job Knowledge and Requirements

      • Effectively leverage relevant data as input to making decisions.
      • Appropriately assess risks before making a decision.
      • Comprehensive understanding of what sexual violence harassment and discrimination are and their varying effects on diverse members of the community.
      • Question and take appropriate steps to address attitudes macroaggressions and other behaviours which are discriminatory. Acknowledges and respects diverse cultural traditions abilities and beliefs.
