Title:

Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Department:

Academics

Responsible To:

Assistant Superintendent of Academics

Qualifications:

Successful completion of the National ACVREP certification exam.

Valid Pupil Servicess License/Certificate issued by the Ohio Department of Education.

Masters Degree or equivalent.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board

may find appropriate and acceptable.

FLSA Classification:

Exempt

Terms of Employment:

Contract salary and benefits per negotiated agreement.

Ranges from 54198 to 89584.

Job Goal:
Provide interventions and evaluations informed by evidence; provide accommodations
and support to help students with visual impairments travel safely and independently in
the school environment.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates students as a part of the multi-factored evaluation process in the areas
    of directional/positional concepts trailing and protective techniques cane use
    and other related areas.
  • Assists with the development of the individualized education program (IEP) for
    students.
  • Plans and implements therapy programs for identified students develops a
    therapy schedule participates in team meetings conferences etc.
  • Uses effective behavior management strategies to create a safe positive and
    engaging learning environment; and is responsible for the care custody and
    supervision of students.
  • Incorporates and promotes instructional assistive and other types of technology;
    and upholds the acceptable use policy.
  • Utilizes appropriate assessment data collection and progress monitoring
    methods to inform instruction and monitor progress.
  • Consults with parents school personnel and outside agencies as appropriate;
    provide families with techniques to assist with therapeutic interventions at home.
  • Provides inservice and training to parents and school personnel.
  • Participates on building level teams.
  • Participates in professional growth activities through staff development
    workshops inservices and higher education.
  • Upholds board policies follows administrative guidelines complies with Federal
    and state laws model policies and procedures rules and regulations for the
    education of students with disabilities. Ensures paperwork is accurate all
    timelines and deadlines are met (annual reviews progress reports etc.) strictly
    adheres to HIPPA and FERPA respects personal privacy and maintains
    confidentiality of privileged information.
  • Maintains high ethical standards exhibits professionalism self-control flexibility
    satisfactory attendance/punctuality dependability accepts responsibility for
    decisions and conduct promotes a favorable image of the Agency etc.).
  • Adapts to unique circumstances and factors such as travel extended hours
    student behaviors lifting/transferring students interactions with
    aggressive/disruptive individuals etc.
  • Ensure the safety of students.
  • Completes other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.

Required knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Maintain appropriate licenses/endorsements and training hours as required.
  • Comply with applicable District state local and federal laws rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to all standards established by the Ohio Department of Education for Licensed Educators.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain knowledge of academic area teaching methodology and strategies to engage students.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit professional behavior emotional stability and sound judgement.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Interacts in a positive manner with staff students and parents.
  • Refer suspected cases of child abuse immediately to the appropriate child protective services/law enforcement agency as mandated by state law and Board of Education policy.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance attitude and conversation.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect district equipment materials and facilities.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for educational assistants (para-professionals) volunteers and student teachers.
