Bev Facey Community High serves approximately 1080 students in grades 10 to 12 with 58 teaching staff and 20 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park AB.

Key Duties/Responsibilities
The Education Assistant (EA) assists teachers in creating a welcoming safe and caring classroom that supports effective learning and student success. Reporting to the Principal the EA is assigned to assist teachers with many instructional and non-instructional tasks in the classroom and during school activities. This includes providing student supervision and assisting students with personal physical and medical care. Under the direction of the teacher and through interdisciplinary team planning the position supports programming for students and assists with the implementation of developmental and behavioural strategies. The Certified EA has received specialized training to assist children and youth who have a wide range of abilities and exceptionalities including significant emotional and behavioural challenges learning difficulties and complex physical health concerns.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Teacher Assistance and Instructional Support
- Assist the teacher in programming for students with a wide range of developmental cognitive learning and behavioural needs.
- Support the teacher in implementing Instructional Support Plan goals for students and in adjusting for student accommodations and success.
- Supervise and assist students with the work to be completed and in the use of computers audio/visual equipment and assistive technology as needed.
- Assist the teacher in recording student activities needs and progress.
- Assist during field trips and in community settings as directed by the teacher.
- Support and assist students co-workers other teachers and classrooms as assigned.
- Participate in school activities special events celebrations and projects.
School and Classroom Behavioural Supports
- Assist the teacher in maintaining a welcoming caring and safe environment for both students and staff with proactive and supportive interventions.
- Assist students in adapting to the classroom focusing and staying on task participating in class activities interacting with others and developing social skills.
- Under the direction of the teacher assist with interventions recommended by EIPS interdisciplinary staff such as Speech Language Pathologists Occupational Therapists specialized assistants and consultants.
- Support the implementation of individual student Behaviour Support Plans.
- Under the direction of the teacher observe chart and monitor individual student progress and behaviours.
- Monitor student behaviours and apply de-escalation and co-regulation strategies and non-violent physical intervention techniques in alignment with EIPS specialized training and procedures.
- Supervise and assist students in playgrounds classrooms hallways and during special activities.
- Encourage and support students wellness inclusivity and independence with life higher grades this includes supporting and developing work experience skills.
- Monitor all students throughout the day to anticipate emotional needs and to curtail inappropriate or unsafe behaviours and actions.
Student Assistance and Care
- Supervise and assist students throughout the day to ensure wellness and safety.
- Ensure the safe arrival of students to school by meeting them on arrival escorting them to classrooms and activities field trips and at the end of the day escorting them to buses or other arranged transportation.
- Assist with personal care including toileting toilet training diapering grooming dressing and other hygiene needs.
- Provide physical support and mobility assistance with walking standing and sitting.
- Assist with drinking food preparation feeding and provide support with lifting transferring and positioning in specialized equipment.
- Practice good body mechanics and assist students with ambulation including the safe use and maintenance of assistive devices providing support with ostomy care and monitoring of ostomy sites.
- Assist with the implementation of the medical emergency plan by monitoring students medical conditions and when required administer medication as directed by the teacher.
- Recognize and demonstrate appropriate responses to safety hazards.
- Administer first aid as required.
Qualifications
Education
Minimum Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- OR Educational Assistant Certificate or equivalent certification or diploma program.
- First Aid Certificate
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Training
Preferred:
- Completion of the EIPS Education Assistant Internship Program.
Experience
Minimum Required:2 years related experience working with children or youth.
Preferred:3 years related experience working in a school.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Strong interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to successfully take direction and work in a multi-disciplinary team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to remain calm in a high stress fast-paced environment.
- Experience using de-escalation emotional regulation and co-regulation techniques.
- Strong collaboration organizational and time management skills.
- Flexibility patience sensitivity tolerance enthusiasm creativity and imagination.
- Knowledge of classroom routines assistive technology and other care equipment.
- Experience providing complex personal and physical care.
- Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of applicable Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Good knowledge of computers and applicable technology.
Note: This position might require lifting and carrying demands that require the ability to bend at the waist stoop and twist frequently the ability to lift between 10 to 50 lbs. the ability to carry push and pull between 10 to 50 lbs. and the ability to stand walk and sit frequently. The incumbent may be subject to challenging behaviours of students.
