Job Summary

As a Support Officer you will strengthen CERN Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) by providing coordination and continuity for non-operational activities during a period of increased workload linked to Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) innovation activities and Future Circular Collider (FCC) preparation. You will support diverse and international staff in relation to safety preparedness and planning activities.

Your responsibilities

  • Support alarm reception activities including acceptance tests and functional checks of fire and safety detection systems particularly during LS3.
  • Assist with preparatory work and site inspections related to LS3 activities including preparation for worksite changes and follow up on incidents when they occur.
  • Draft and update evacuation plans verify the information on the plans and support safety officers during evacuation exercises when requested.
  • Support the preparation of emergency response arrangements for current accelerators in cooperation with third party emergency responders.
  • Support FCC safety work for surface and underground infrastructure by contributing to emergency response concepts for the future accelerator including robotics and proof of concept activities with CERN specialists and partners.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and HSE follow up activities.
  • Support budget tracking and coordination with relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain documentation and ensure proper follow up with CFRS and FCC stakeholders.

 

Your profile

  • Background or strong knowledge of emergency response environments.
  • Experience with firefighting activities or support to incident commanders is considered an asset.

Skills

  • Practical understanding of rescue techniques and firefighting operations.
  • Knowledge of incident command principles and emergency response structures.
  • Ability to operate in safety critical and time sensitive environments.
  • Ability to interact effectively across different organisational levels and with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to propose pragmatic and well-reasoned solutions.
  • High level of precision and reliability in daily work.
  • Ability to document activities decisions and follow up actions in a clear and structured manner.
  • Spoken and written English or French with a commitment to learn the basics of the other language.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • By the application deadline you have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Emergency Management/Rescue (or a related field) and your highest educational qualification is either a Bachelors or Masters degree.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
  • Applicants without University degree are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a PhD are not eligible.

Additional Information :

Job closing date: 09.04.2026 at 23:59 CEST.

Contract duration: 24 months with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite

Target start date: 01-June-2026

This position involves:

  • Work during nights Sundays and official holidays.
  • Work in Radiation Areas.
  • Interventions in underground installations.
  • A valid driving licence.
  • Exposure to electromagnetic fields under certain exposure conditions.
  • Exposure as professional operational firefighter.

Given the occupational health risks associated with this position the selected candidate must obtain medical clearance before a contract offer is confirmed.
