Job Summary

Position Title: 1.0 FTE High School English Department Head

FLSA: Exempt

Reports to: LHS Principal

Terms of Employment: 0.75 FTE Supervision and Evaluation/0.25 FTE Teaching

2026 - 2027 school year

ALA Category VI

Salary: Salary is commensurate with educational attainment and experience as specified by the Association of Lexington Administrators Salary Schedule Category VI. Salary and days may be prorated based on date of hire.

Work Year: 10 month 196 days (184 school days and 12 additional days)

Benefits as per ALA contract

August 31 2026 start date but additional days may start as of July 1 2026.

FY26 salary scale may increase upon FY27 completed negotiations

Supervision Responsibilities:

  • Follows and implements the supervision/ evaluation guidelines as dictated by the district for all teachers in the department
  • Supervises and evaluates department staff in conjunction with building administration
  • Works with teachers to ensure equitable best practices in the classroom and in PLC and team meetings
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Shares professional growth opportunities as well as current trends and methodologies within the Social Studies department
  • Maintains an accurate inventory of materials and supplies necessary to effectively support instruction in the department
  • Plans agendas and leads district-wide department meetings as appropriate
  • Develops and implements curriculum units and lessons with teachers
  • When appropriate plans and leads curriculum reviews in conjunction with K-5 and 6-8 Department Heads to ensure that the curriculum is aligned (in-district and to DESE guidelines) and culturally responsive.
  • Assists with the development and updates of relevant and necessary communication between the department school parents and /or community.
  • Collaborates with other department heads in the district to ensure consistency of district policies and programs.
  • Collaborates with building leadership to coordinate and implement the hiring process
  • Participates in building leadership meetings

Teaching Position Responsibilities:

  • Meets and instructs grade 9-12 students in English Language Arts during assigned class time and in the locations and designated.
  • Plans a program of study that as much as possible meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and in harmony with the goals establishes clear objectives for all lessons units and projects to communicate these objectives to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Maintains accurate complete and correct records as required by law district policy and administrative regulation.
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and for the classroom develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms and as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement if applicable.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Evaluates pupils academic and social growth keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health attitude and learning problems.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district testing program.
  • All other duties as assigned.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess or be eligible for a MA DESE license in the appropriate subject area at the appropriate grade level.

Must have appropriate DESE license for the supervision and evaluation of staff

Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology.

Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.
