Job Summary

A vacancy has arisen for a Flight Lieutenant (Pilot (Any)) to serve as OC 5 Air Experience Flight (AEF) at RAF Wittering on Full Time Reserve Service (Limited Commitment) Terms and Conditions of Service (TCoS) with an initial proposed start date of being not before 07 September 2026 (or later subject to candidate status).

6 Flying Training School (6 FTS) is the largest and most diverse military flying training school in the UK. From its HQ at RAF Cranwell 6 FTS manages a broad range of flying tasks from Elementary Flying Training on University Air Squadrons to the provision of Air Experience Flying (AEF) for RAF Air Cadets (RAFAC).

The successful applicant will be embedded within Cambridge UAS (CUAS) and command No.5 AEF primarily delivering the cadet flying task on the Grob Tutor TMk1. You will also deliver air and ground instruction for ab-initio aircrew as well as conversion and currency training for experienced aircrew on No.5 you will be working as a member of a small team on CUAS and may be required to undertake a range of secondary duties associated with the supervision of flying and the management of the in addition to your duties as OC 5 AEF you may be required to carry out those duties associated with a commissioned officer of your rank. Specifically you will be required to:

  • Provide air experience flying for cadets of the Air Training Corps (ATC) and Combined Cadet Force (CCF); and flying experience including elementary flying instruction for undergraduate members of CUAS.
  • Recruit and supervise a cadre of AEF volunteer pilots.
  • Conduct instructional and standardisation sorties for UAS and AEF staff.
  • Convert to the Tutor (Grob 115E) aircraft. Prior to taking up your post you may be required to attend 115 Sqn at RAF Wittering for QFI conversion and refresher training and during your employment you will be required to attend 16 Sqn Standards Flight (RAF Wittering) annually for routine flying standardisation.
  • Undergo training and maintain currency for the following: Force Protection Individual Readiness Training RAF Fitness Test Flying Supervisors Course; Human Factors / Error Management; Aviation Medicine Training Wing; Defence Train the Trainer; and if required attend the Short Interview Technique Course.
  • Be available to attend training evenings during university term times if required by OC CUAS.
  • Assist with recruiting new UAS students at the start of each university year visiting the freshers fairs of its affiliated universities and conducting interviews if required by the OC UAS.
  • Assist in the mentoring and delivery of leadership training to UAS students.
  • The current working week is Monday to Friday. However applicants should be aware of ongoing work at RAF Wittering to commence weekend flying for 5 AEF with a potential requirement to work 5 days out of every 7 including weekend flying.
