Position Summary: Serves as the buildings chief instructional leader and administrator. Provides leadership to faculty and staff to ensure high-quality teaching and learning aligned to District Ends the Vermont Agency of Education and district-approved curriculum. Leads adult learning through coaching and professional development; supervises and evaluates staff; and uses multiple sources of data to guide school improvement and decision making. Oversees all school programs and operations including special education and related services ensuring compliance with federal and state mandates. Creates and sustains a school environment that is physically socially and emotionally safe and that recognizes and fosters diversity equity inclusion and belonging for all students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned)
- Serves in an administrative leadership position by:
- Administering student-related processes that assures attendance achievement growth and development including but not limited to: student evaluation standardized testing conduct and discipline student assignments to classes and the maintenance and transfer of records.
- Ensuring alignment and implementation with the districts strategic plan MTSS implementation and grant-funded school improvement plans in collaboration with the EDLSS.
- Coordinating with the Director of Learning and school administrators to establish master teacher schedules as well as an annual schedule of events including but not limited to: student assessments staff professional development activities and the school calendar.
- Implementing policy and procedure changes as mandated by State and/or Federal regulations and as directed by the Superintendent.
- Updating and publishing staff and student handbooks school-related publications and website content.
- Preparing the school budget; monitoring expenditures in assigned areas to ensure efficacy and a direct link to the educational goals of the district.
- Overseeing in consultation with the Director of Learning and Educational Support Systems (DLESS) all student support services including special education Section 504 and related services. Ensures implementation of IEPs and other plans adherence to required timelines and due process and compliance with all federal and state special education mandates; ultimate accountability for special education compliance within the building rests with the Principal.
- Assists in scheduling special events during the school day.
- Coordinating with Central Office personnel for the effective functioning of the school.
- Creating and sustaining a school environment that is physically socially and emotionally safe for students and staff; fostering a positive respectful school culture and climate; and ensuring practices that recognize and promote diversity equity inclusion and belonging for all students.
- Manages building level curriculum and instruction by:
- Maintaining in conjunction with the DLESS and other school administrators a cohesive PK-12 educational plan consistent with the District Ends policy and the Vermont Agency of Education.
- Overseeing the development of the Programs of Studies document and coordinating with the Director of Guidance to establish the Master Schedule and class schedules for students.
- Ensuring regular review and revision of school curricular. Leading district-approved building-level improvements of the educational program.
- Coordinating with building administrators Curricular Area Supervisors (CAS) BLTs and other building leaders to establish priorities for educational materials and the selection and evaluation of instructional materials in order to meet educational needs within allowable funding.
- Serving as the buildings primary instructional leader by providing training coaching and feedback; leading professional learning communities; and ensuring consistent implementation of district-approved curriculum instructional practices and assessment expectations.
- Analyzing student learning growth attendance behavior and other relevant data (including disaggregated data) to identify trends and equity gaps; using findings to inform continuous improvement decision making and allocation of staff and resources.
- Manages directly or through assigned staff personnel related issues such as:
- Coordinating the assignment of teachers to classrooms and duties.
- Supervising faculty/staff attendance and the assignment of substitutes.
- Supervising supporting and evaluating staff and program performance and effectiveness including formal observations feedback and growth-oriented coaching. Coordinating in-service training and professional learning for assigned faculty/staff as necessary.
- Maintaining accurate employee records as required by Federal State and local laws and regulations.
- Recruiting hiring and monitoring performance of support staff and substitutes in consultation with Human Resources. Makes hiring recommendations of professional staff to the Superintendent/designee.
- Assisting in developing performance improvement plans and/or professional non-renewal or dismissal processes in consultation with the Superintendent/designee.
- Directs and supervises the work of assigned personnel and manages personnel issues and concerns.
- Assists with school community relations by:
- Attending student athletic and extracurricular activities and/or ensuring administrative representation (beyond the athletic director) at such events.
- Interacting with students in a constructive manner to encourage individuals to perform at their highest level.
- Maintaining and promoting relationships with faculty/staff parents/guardians volunteers support groups and outside agencies.
- Participating in district-wide activities in-service programs and committees as appropriate.
- Maintains professional development for self and assigned staff by:
- Approving as directed professional development workshops leaves and other activities in accordance with school and individual staff development plans and in consultation with building administrators and the Director of Learning.
- Remaining current on educational/school administration issues with which appropriate licensure may be maintained.
- May serve as the lead administrator for the district in the absence of the Superintendent or as interim Superintendent as required.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages assigned professional and support staff. Is responsible for the overall direction coordination and evaluation of the school when the Principal is absent from the building. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Regular attendance in accordance with the established work schedule is required. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace diversity sustainability and delivering exceptional customer service is essential.
Education and/or Experience: A Master of Education degree in administration curriculum supervision or other educational area related to secondary education or the equivalent in coursework. One to three (3) or more years administrative experience preferably at the secondary level or documentation of administrative experiences preferably at the secondary level such as an internship interim position or extensive specific project or comparable administrative/leadership experience in a private or non-profit organization. Three (3) years or more years of successful teaching experience preferably at the secondary level.
Certificates Licenses and Registrations: Valid Vermont Teaching License with appropriate level endorsement and Administrator certificate.
Other Skills and Abilities: Personal computer word processing database internet and spreadsheet skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in a specific field. Demonstrated success in administrative planning program development utilization and modification of resources is preferred. A demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff and the community is essential. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and School Board policies are also required.
